Avoid Texas CHL classes; get Virginia permit online!
Virginia is issuing a rising number of concealed-carry gun permits to people who live in other states in a trend that may be helped along by online gun classes.
The commercial courses allow applicants to seek a permit from Virginia that is valid in their state, but without having to meet tougher requirements their home states may impose, such as firing a gun with an instructor.
Virginia State Police issued 1,632 concealed-carry permits to nonresidents through the first half of 2012, topping the previous year's total of 1,321 nonresident permits. There was no corresponding increase in demand for resident permits, with just under half the previous year's number reached by mid-2012.

If I recall correctly; that's how John Woods got his.
He and Colin Goddard went to gun shows to show how easy it is for non-criminals to buy a gun (as it should be)
I'm not sure exactly what point he was trying to make with the online license he got; perhaps that anyone could, without showing mental acuity. I see Andrew Goddard on Brady's payroll proved it too. Oh I see Lori Haas got her name in the article too.

So if I were to get one of these I could then Open Carry here in OK. My TX CHL prevents me from OC when it becomes legal in OK 11-01-2012. Is this worth looking into?

As I read the new law (effective 1-Nov-12) ( http://newlsb.lsb.state.ok.us/BillInfo.aspx?Bill=sb1733" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ),
Section 1290.26.
RECIPROCAL AGREEMENT AUTHORITY
The State of Oklahoma hereby recognizes any valid concealed or unconcealed carry weapons permit or license issued by another state.
Any person entering this state in possession of a firearm authorized for concealed or unconcealed carry upon the authority and license of another state is authorized to continue to carry a concealed or unconcealed firearm and license in this state; provided the license from the other state remains valid. The firearm must either be carried fully unconcealed or concealed from detection and view, and upon coming in contact with any peace officer of this state, the person must disclose the fact that he or she is in possession of a concealed or unconcealed firearm pursuant to a valid concealed or unconcealed carry weapons permit or license issued in another state. Any person who is twenty-one (21) years of age or older having a valid firearm license from another state may apply for a concealed handgun license in this state immediately upon establishing a residence in this state.

I think this is the rub. Are they going to say you only have a 'concealed' carry license from your state, so you can only carry concealed?RoyGBiv wrote:Why??RSJ wrote:My TX CHL prevents me from OC when it becomes legal in OK 11-01-2012.![]()

Re: Avoid Texas CHL classes; get Virginia permit online!
There's a lot of worry here in TX (and on this forum) that making it "too easy" to obtain a CC permit from another state might be met with an overreaction by TX state legislators, resulting in less reciprocity with other states...
For example, if TX legislature deemed it "too easy" (insert myriad of reasons here) to get a VA permit, they could move to eliminate reciprocity with that state, thereby making it more difficult for TX CHL's to carry in VA.
I will argue all day that Texas license requirements are defined by the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, and that TX CHL requirements are too restrictive and FAR FAR too expensive, but I cannot deny the very real possibility that a VA online license is a real risk for reduced reciprocity and other problems (both perceived and real).
You can check the UT threads for opinions, and this VA permit seems even easier to obtain than UT.
Hopefully TX Constitutional Carry is not too far off.

Re: Avoid Texas CHL classes; get Virginia permit online!
And for the original topic, marketing tactics like these rubbing the other states faces in the fact you can more easily get a permit that will allow you to bypass your states process is why Utah changed their law to require you have a license from your state of residence, Colorado quit honoring non-resident licenses, and even Florida, who issues a non-resident license will not honor another state's non-resident license. Louisiana won't allow their residents to carry on a non-resident license. I also truly believe this is why New Mexico was going through their reciprocity requirements recently and caused such a stink. These licenses are on the radar of the anti's, and believe me, they are getting the attention of the legislators in lots of states.

The way I read this is.... If you have any permit (TX CHL, for example) you can carry either concealed or unconcealed in OK.Keith B wrote: I think this is the rub. Are they going to say you only have a 'concealed' carry license from your state, so you can only carry concealed?
