Verizon pays ME every month.

In 1995 I retired from New York Telephone Company, which shortly thereafter finally rolled all the way into NYNEX, which then merged with Bell Atlantic, which was bought by Verizon, so I have received pension checks from 4 different companies. And a company I never worked for pays me to not work for them.

FIOS is not available in my neighborhood or I would have it, because retirees get a discount.

I've got a Samsung SDE-3004 Home security monitor. It's a DVR with 4 cameras. (You can get units with 8 and 16 cameras) It's a DIY system that does require a little expertise with networking, but I've found their support folks to be very helpful.
This system can be set up so that the cameras are motion detectors and will send you an e-mail with a photo if motion is detected. You can also view the system with an iPhone app called iPolis. (I believe it's also available for android.)
Cameras are wired and the ones that came default with my system don't carry sound, and do not pan. You can get better camera's to replace the ones that came with it.
You can access the system with a web browser any where you have internet connection. I'd certainly recommend looking at one of these before you buy.
I have a camera in my foyer. My stair case is open, so as I go down, my lower extremities are exposed to a BG coming in before I can see. My iPhone sitting on my night stand net to my gun solves that problem. I can check out the foyer before I head down the stairs.

The web interface requires IE on windows, with active X. I just run XP in virtualbox on my MacBook Pro.

TAM, I'd recommend a visit to Altex in Carrollton. They have a very good display of cameras, DVRs, etc. Why? Because it will give you some personal insight to what you can see and what you cannot with the various types of cameras. Once you have a standard in your mind for how you want to use the camera, you can compare it to the D-Link and see if it measures up.

I'm not associated with Altex in any way but took advantage of their willingness to demonstrate the available options when I was there for computer parts. Cameras are on my priority list but haven't bubbled to the top yet. When they do, I know exactly what I want and will look at the stuff that is available at that moment.

I have both the day only and the day and night D Link internet security cameras. Both work fine. Fairly easy to set up. Most problems involve your wireless internet not being strong enough to provide a signal if they get to far away from the wireless base station.

The day night camera is a must unless you plan to leave a light on all the time for the day camera to work at night.

I had one pointed at the back door (most obvious place to break into my house) and one on the stairs to get a nice close up of anyone going up stairs.

Sends an live images to my iPhone or my desktop. But thats about as far as I got. Figuring out how to make it record to my hard drive on my desktop and setting up the motion sensor to alert me and start the recording process is where I got busy and never finished. My fault not the camera's, course this is where the software got kind of technical.

For the money, they seemed a pretty inexpensive. There is one that is about three times as much that does the same thing made by logitech. I suspect the software is a little easier to master and probably is worth it, since I really never got it fully operational.

It's a while later since the last post--- TAM-- what did you decide to install ?

We decided to put at least 1 in. Got all 4 tires grabbed off the truck last evening.

I am considering one on the driveway area and another out front.

Driveway area has good night lighting from neighbors' MV light over his garage.
