Cuban Embargo
I won't turn this thread into a political topic. I think it's about time we ended the Cuban embargo. Castro has outlived how many US presidents? Do we really consider Cuban a threat to our national security?

The current US interaction with Russia is not the best and now may not be the time.

As soon as this occurs, you can bet that there will be a flood of car collectors running down there to get all the '57 chevy's they can float back...

Re: Cuban Embargo
That brings up a good point!
We would be shipping new cars down there by the boatload! What a boom to our economy and the Auto Industry!
And, we would be getting back Cigars on the boat return trips!

Does Russia still care about or support Cuba? I haven't heard of any recent threats or concerns about terrorists from Cuba.AEA wrote:I feel the same way.......but.....

Not Cuba per-se......but if the Missile Defense is re-instated in Europe/Mid-East, Russia might eye Cuba to send a few of their own missiles down there again!

All the more reason to bring then into our fold. Realistically, if we open economic ties we'll simply assimilate them. I think that would sit well with most of the Cuban population.AEA wrote:Not Cuba per-se......but if the Missile Defense is re-instated in Europe/Mid-East, Russia might eye Cuba to send a few of their own missiles down there again!

Re: Cuban Embargo
China and Cuba are playing economic footsie and because of that, China is drilling very close to our coast....so now China can claim it has economic interests to protect.
Russia is currently in talks with Cuba about establishing a naval base. Cuba is a foe.

Re: Cuban Embargo
Cuban leadership would never allow the U.S. to assimilate its people or influence its government. They have no reason to warmly welcome the fox in the hen house when they have governments with similar principles & doctrines, China and Russia, supporting them.BigGuy wrote:All the more reason to bring then into our fold. We buy everything that Red China can produce. Why are we still treating Cuba the way we do?

It would be nice to legally enjoy the forbidden fruits of Cuba (cigars, rum, etc...). Plus I would *legally* like to travel there...sure, I know you can go to Mexico and hop on a plane to Cuba...but still. Talking with a fellow cigar smoker on a transatlantic cruise a few years ago (he's a Canadian), his thoughts: "Cuba is great, I love traveling there, I was sitting on the porch of the hotel, smoking a cigar and relaxing...then it dawned on me, it sure is nice not to have Americans here!"
I gave him some grief but do understand where he is coming from. Next thing you know there will be a Hooters, McDonalds and a Starbucks on the beach, all with their own cigar stores....

If we ever invade Cuba tourist-wise, you can bet those zero tolerance can't enjoy any personal freedom idjits will ruin it for everyone else. There will not be any cigar smoking allowed once they complete their mission.PUCKER wrote:It would be nice to legally enjoy the forbidden fruits of Cuba (cigars, rum, etc...). The question that should be posed is why are we buying anything from China? We are paying for the bullets they may one day be shooting at us.anygunanywhere wrote:We buy everything that Red China can produce. Why are we still treating Cuba the way we do?

Cuba is a staging point in our back yard and is a real strategic threat. Cuba is the same distance from the gulf coast energy center as is the distance across Texas. In addition to fueling the country, Texas is also the center of the U.S. electrical grid.
Both China and Cuba are threats to the U.S. & there is no logical justification for viewing either as benign. The U.S., due to the incompetence of JFK, messed up and should have removed the Castro regime in the 60's.
