My 2nd renewal - Completed

Post by AEA »

I applied on the first available day (6mos prior to expiration) on the TXDPS Website this past Monday.

I am a Vet and over 60 but only got one deduction and paid 35.00 + 2.00 processing.........(these State/City "processing fees" are beginning to bug me).

I have heard of Vets over 60 getting it for 17.50 (both deductions). I halfway expected to get that when the first question in the application process was are you active, retired or veteran?

Anyway, taking a renewal only class this Friday evening.
I will send the 2 required items by online submission after Friday's class (Checklist & CHL-100).

This will probably be my last class! Because when I renew on the 3rd, no class is required & by the time comes for a 4th, I'll most likely be pushing up daisies! :eek6

Re: My 2nd renewal started

Did the class/range last evening. I am not going to say where I went but I was quite happy with the way the class went (Renewal Only) and the fact there were only 7 in the class.

The reason I am not going to say where I went is because there was one little problem that I was not happy with........

In the last 15 min of the 2nd hour, the instructor introduced a female salesperson for one of those prepaid Legal Services. I had a feeling this was going to happen as there was a large banner I noticed earlier on the wall of the classroom advertising this service ([Pre-paid legal service] - Houston, Tx).

As soon as the instructor completed his introduction of this salesperson (District Manager on her card) I asked "can I opt out of this"? The instructor said "you can, but it is part of the training". I replied "NO, it is NOT part of the required training" and the salesperson then said "YES, you can opt out". I stood up and walked out of the classroom with the instructor. The other six students remained.

Once outside the classroom, I informed the instructor further that TXDPS has come down on this marketing scheme and have stated that it is NOT to be part of the training. It can be promoted during a break for those that are interested, but it is not part of the class, not part of the training time and students MUST have the option to opt out of the presentation. I further informed him that TXDPS is planting "students" in classes to catch this activity by instructors and he looked at me and said "You"??? I said NO, I was simply informing him.

When it was over, I went back into the classroom and one of the other six in there told me "we should have left with you" and the others all laughed a little.

Anyway, that is my rant. Otherwise smooth and I submitted my checklist and CHL-100 online last night. Now I am good for the next 10 years! No more class, qualification or sales pitches for the 3rd renewal in 5 years. :anamatedbanana

DPS says "A CHL applicant cannot combine the application fee reductions from multiple special conditions."

Thanks :tiphat:

I see that was revised in Oct 2011. I don't know when I saw a poster on this forum that stated with a phone call he got both deductions.

Hello and glad I found this thread while utilizing the "search" function rgearding the [pre-paid legal] program. Our instructor had no qualms about pimping for [pre-paid legal], even mentioning it multiple times prior to the range and while we watined for all people to get back to the classroom. There was a "Regional Sales Mgr" from [pre-paid legal] introduced and he did his best Story telling to the kids for a while and then signed us up. About 20 out of 25 bought it. I am not here to debate your thoughts on the [pre-paid legal], but I found it very unprofessional for the Instructor to dedicate roughly an hour of the class to getting his spiff's for the sales.

Does anyone have a link to the DPS for reporting this behaviour? I don't mind having to go sit in another hour of class if required to make sure I AM in compliance with the mandated 10hours. Given some of the personal stories our instructor shared I have no doubts he believes the [pre-paid legal] to be of great value and honestly wants the best for his students. I just don't think or agree with taking up class time for it. There were plenty of people in my class that could bend light they were so dense. They needed all the Q & A time he should have spent PRIOR to signing off on their CHL-100 and arming someone who might require more attention.

I am also not surprised that [pre-paid legal] has scare tactics involced in there sales, but if I was going to be pimping for a law firm, and breaking the law to do it I might not want to do it in a DPS mandated class. I think someone there might deserve a slight spanking to remind them of the Ethics portion of law.

Appreciate the assistance and hope this doesn't derail the OP's thread too much. I just noticed how everyone seesm to get bent when a new thread about [pre-paid legal] gets started.

They received my checklist and CHL-100 on Oct 1st.
They mailed the CHL on Friday Oct 19th.

So, total 19 days when they had my stuff till they mailed the CHL. Pretty good!

Got mine in the mail today.
Took them half as long to get it to me as it did to do everything else. Strange that the mail takes that long from Austin to DFW (10 days).

Almost makes me think they send out the mail only once a week.

Oh, and although I asked them to use my TXDL picture (which was updated this year when I got a duplicate and the "Veteran" designation) they used the same one from the previous CHL (1st renewal) which is 5 years old! :banghead:
