I fear that too many have forgotten the sacrifices that were made to achieve that victory. This is an even more special day for me because it would have been my Dad's 92nd birthday. He served in the Army for 25 years and was in the "mop up" campaign through Italy. But for an officer pulling rank and taking the jeep that my Dad was about to drive off in, he would have probably taken the mortar round instead and died there.
I never was able to properly thank Dad for his service. He never wanted to talk about it. He was one of many who were just doing the duty they saw it. I am grateful for what all of them did for us.
