Defense Ammo

Post by gguess66 »

What is a good self defense ammo for a Sig P229 in a 9mm? My brother in law suggested Hornady critical defense, federal ultimate shock, and I can't remember the other one. :txflag:

Any quality maker's hollow point that you can afford to practice with, and that functions well in your gun. I know it sounds a little flippant, but it's not meant to be. I happen to like the Remington Golden Saber.

ive used gold dots, golden sablers, winchester pdx and hornady cd ftx. Personally I like the gold dot the best. It does very well in tests and you can buy it in boxes of 50 at gtdistributors so it makes practice with defensive ammo a little cheaper.

As already mentioned, there are many good rounds out there, so long as it functions right in your pistol.

Gold Dots and Win Rangers are among some of the best, favoring 124 or 127gr.

Federal HST is the way to go for self defense ammo. You'll have to look for it online for the most part. If you can't find that Speer Gold Dots is another good choice.

I like Federal Hydra-Shok. I am not saying it is the best, just what I carry.

Nothing wrong with the Critical Defense. You might also check out Hornady Super Duty. Those are my main ones I prefer, but I also like Federal HST.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the personal defense ammo these days. The main thing is will it work in your firearm?

I heard about a cop who took down a grizzly bear with one shot of 40 S&W Speer Gold Dot on the ProArms Podcast in an interview with Massad Ayoob. So that's gotta be pretty amazing stuff its just not whats in my pistol.

I'm a big fan of Gold Dots first, then Golden Sabers. I use them in all of my defensive handguns.

Per the story, Deputy Jonathan Merry shot a black bear, not a grizzly, and he used 165-gr. Winchester Ranger-T .40, not Speer Gold Dot.

Other than a few details, you got the rest of it right.

Regarding rifles, the story also said:
However, the MCSD members I interviewed felt the issued Hornady TAP 55-gr. .223, and Hornady TAP 110-gr. .308 ammo did the job as intended. Meant as anti-personnel loads that might have to be used in populated Zanesville, they stayed in the bodies of the animals as designed.
This makes one think:
Still at large was one of the bigger Bengal tigers. The preceding night had taught the officers the great cats were tough. Ryan Williams estimated they were putting an average of 30 .223 rounds into the lions to keep them down. Tigers run bigger than lions.
