Lock box for car

Post by rseymour21 »

I thought it was a requirement to put your weapon in a locked box if you need to leave it in the car. That could be a lockable glovebox or safe with cable. Is this law or just smart?

Neither. It's personal preference.

i have a small safe bolted to the floor of the truck to the frame. so I can lock it in a safe place if i venture to a place i cant carry.
i figure if the truck is stolen, it will take more than an hour to get the safe out and then maybe an hr to open it
at least they cant just break in and take it and run away

To be quite honest, I think that is kind of counterproductive in having your weapon in a locked safe in your car. When you find yourself in imminent danger kind of situation, where your life is on the line; do you really won’t to have to take more of those valuable seconds to have to deal with a lock? If someone wants to steal your firearm, they will find a way. You build a better mouse trap and the mice get smarter.

You assume it stays in that condition 100% of the time. It's handy to have. I go to bars on occasion (where I can't carry) and I need to Valet. I have a hidden lock-box that I can stash my EDC and spare mag into and lock it up out of sight. So, even if the Valet goes snooping around they will have a hard time getting it open. Also, I cannot carry at work and it's just an added bit of security leaving in a locked location out of sight while I'm working.

If I am driving I have it in my car holster, then I transfer it to my on body holster when I get out the rest of the time.

I never assume anything. I said that I find it “counterproductive” and that I personally don’t see a benefit for me. I don’t like having my firearm where I can’t readily have access to it, no matter the time frame. While you’re wasting time trying to open your safe, I have already retrieved my weapon. I also don’t allow people to drive my vehicle because you never really know who is driving your car. I have installed a nice step up that works for me that’s “concealed.” The extra mags that are close by that are hidden in plain sight. I have had this set up for the last six years without incident. I’m not saying their bad but I just don’t think their worth the money. It’s about your comfort level, I find less is more.

Hmm, interesting.
So for the price of a rock or brick even the most basic of thieves in a simple smash and grab will have a nice Sig to the bounty. not one option most would prefer.

You list Fort hood as location and your unit as Scout Plt, HHT, 2/3d Cavalry Regiment, and 29 years of age... so your the PL, a SQD LDR, or perhaps a PSG.. IOW, you know the rules on post, or should.. (It's CG Policy letter 02 http://www.hood.army.mil/leaders/polici ... /CG-02.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ).. So I'll ASSUME you are a Soldier and reside on and or work on FT HOOD.. Meaning you do not carry your pistol to work, and or at home, on base, and have the same issues with legal carry the rest of us do that must enter a federal place for work or residence. .. So the whole less is more, I'm always ready thing kind of falls on it's face at that point. I ASSUME

The Lock box is a very good idea if you MUST leave your weapon in the car, law? no.. But IMHO still a good idea..
If I am running to my car to get away from a bad guy, I'll simply get in it and drive away.. Not root around for a gun locked or otherwise. Two; my lock box and gun are quickly accessible to me once the car or truck is unlocked.. and in a time frame I would be comfortable trying to gain access to it locked up or other wise,,, I could.. SO to me, the lock box is not detrimental to access and a much better idea than stuffing it under the seat or dash.

I have had my Cannon Safe lock box bolted to the floorboard of my vehicles since 1998 for keeping the gun secured when I can not carry my gun. Last year I had jury duty at the Galveston courthouse and of course can't carry so I felt that I had taken reasonable measures to keep the gun out of the wrong hands.

" I also don’t allow people to drive my vehicle because you never really know who is driving your car."

How do you avoid those who must drive your vehicle on occasion, such as: The Annual Safety Inspection sticker requirement driver - as one example...

Have any tips?

Thanks!

A good lock box with a stiff steel cable will prevent all but the most determined theives. And if it's one of the most determined theives, probably no safe or lock box will prevent the theft. Then again, somebody walking down the street with heavy duty bolt cutters or an acetelene torch kit would probably stand out.

I'm prohibited from carrying at work, and it's not practical for me to have the safe bolted to the frame. So I've looped the cable around one of the seat posts & I slide the box as far as it will go underneath the seat. The box is for storage only. The other 98% of the time, my carry is on me. Until my employer wakes up or I hear of a better system, I'll keep it.

I got a Bulldog Car Vault from Cabela's, nothing fancy, just a lock box to hide my gun in while I am at work. I wrap the cable around the seat bracket to stop the amateur smash and grab.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, thanks for the laugh! Yes, I am currently working for the U.S. Army but my current unit has changed, so thanks for letting me know that I need to update my job status on here. Bit of a “Creeper” for looking my personnel info but okay. My current chain of command knows how I store my weapon. My SecSgt actually removed his box out and is using my setup. They know me very well and know my experience and that is probably why they have not said anything. As for someone breaking into my truck, I highly doubt that a thief would want to attempt to rob my truck for many reasons. The first is that is lifted 6” inches and has huge tires on it. That makes getting in and out a pain. My alarm on my truck is not the standard and it sends an alert to me the minute it senses the glass breaks or the door being opened after it armed. Then they have to find the weapon. I don’t drink, so I don’t have the problem of having to store my weapon. I also don’t go to establishments that don’t recognize my rights. I obviously don’t carry to work since I it is against the rules and make it a “Federal Offense.” I don’t live on post for the fact that possessing weapons on post comes with restrictions. I’m not saying that box’s aren’t a good, I’m saying that FOR ME its pro’s don’t out way the con’s. I have just heard too many stories about safes getting jacked from cars. That is why I tried something else that worked for ME. I’m not saying that he should not buy one, just look at other options.
Abraham- I have been taking my vehicles to the same auto shop in my hometown since I had my hardship license. They have done all the work on my vehicles, so he knows my stuff is working properly. I don’t let people drive my vehicle but I do allow ride a longs HAHAHAHAHAHHA!

and

"Brave Rifles"

When you put it all out there for all to see, it's not creeping, it's called observation.. Something a Cav Scout should understand.

So still at Hood?

I see you changed your profile to just hood..no longer listing your info as Scout Plt, HHT, 2/3d Cavalry Regiment.

It's your profile, available to all with just one click. :tiphat:

PM me if you have time tomorrow, we can link up and talk CHL, and Tangos, and guns in vehicles and Caucasian Ovcharkas, and chocolate labs stolen and wives, and girlfriends, and puppy's, and landlords.

I’m not a Cavalry Scout, I am an Infantryman. The phased out 19D’s from the Regiment since they shifted from Armor to a Stryker Brigade. My former PL was a 19D but they pretty much moved on to other things. It is interesting see how Bravo’s approach to reconnaissance. As for meeting, that would be great. My schedule is a little crazy with training, running to Scott & White twice a week and plus other duties but yeah, it would be nice to hang out with some fellow CHLer’s. I will PM you when I can get away.

I have something similar and do the same.
