Traveling question.
Traveling question.
If you were on a road trip and would be driving thru/visiting a state that did not honor/recognize a Texas CHL do you still carry or leave it at home? We are driving to Chicago next week to spend Thanksgiving with my son who is in Navy Boot Camp. I hate the idea of going anywhere unarmed but dont want to wind up in a Chicago jail either.

And going to NTC Great Lakes, you will have trouble avoiding Cook County (Chicago) as all of the interstates pass through at least a portion of that anti-gun enclave.Txfire409 wrote:If you were on a road trip and would be driving thru/visiting a state that did not honor/recognize a Texas CHL do you still carry or leave it at home? If you are determined to take your gun along, carry where it's legal, and put the gun, unloaded, in a lock box when passing through IL and particularly Cook County, and then rely on the FOPA to protect you, even though a visit to NTCGLAKES probably doesn't qualify as a "short stop."
Real gun control, carrying 24/7/365

You are never in trouble for anything---till you get caught.
Re: Traveling question.
I visit Michigan every year and basically have to go through Illinois to get there. I put my gun unloaded into a lock box in Missouri and take it out again in Michigan and vice versa. However I am clearly going through for FOPA only stopping for gas or food. I also avoid Chicago proper. You have a more difficult situation.

Re: Traveling question.
As much as we enjoy RV traveling, there are several places we have no intention of going, Chicago/Cook County, IL is way up on the list. In fact, it's right under NYC and just before the left coast Kalifornia cities.
Good luck.
Good luck.

When I visit family in IL I also, unload it, lock it up, and put it in the back until I arrive at my family member's house. Then we load back up and shoot whenever we want. No carrying anywhere in the state and obey all traffic laws.
Now, unless you have family in IL and near enough to stay with, you have the added difficulty of visiting someone on federal property. What were you planning on doing with your gun while on the base?

I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.
