Second article in the last couple of days. I read this suspecting a liberal anti-gun bias and found it to be relatively down the middle. Not what I expected in the end.

I didn't really learn anything reading that.

True it wasn't a fact piece, but what struck me was that one of the "opinionators" for the paper took a fairly rational and balanced stance on the issue of gunownership and open carry. It isn't what I normally see when reading the newspaper.RoyGBiv wrote:I didn't really learn anything reading that.

Boy, that comment from "Chris Smith" was right on.

It may indeed be a tactical error to open carry in many situations. On the other hand, it should be my error to make, and not the state government. This matter is getting a lot of press for being so early in the process. May be good and may be bad. I suspect that many legislators will have their opinions on this matter framed by their constituents responses to these articles.

EXACTLY!
The never ending conversation about what is tactically correct should almost be a separate thread from whether OC should be enacted or not.
In the same way it might be a tactical error for me to walk up to the biggest guy in a bar and say nasty things about his mother, it is still a right which is guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.
Just like OCing, exercising any right may come with consequences.

I'm not sure OC is always, 100%, tactically wrong, but I probably won't choose to do it basically because of my life...I spend it in the company of old people and children...I've always taught my children, esp my son

I agree. To me it's like someone carrying a .380 or .32 or even smaller caliber. I think it's a bad idea, for me, but in a free society it's not our business to mandate what and how other people carry.gdanaher wrote:It may indeed be a tactical error to open carry in many situations. Precisely why in a state that permits OC I have my CHL. But there are times OC is appropriate.

I didn't see the rationality, her objection: "What’s stupid and potentially dangerous is this blanket refusal to talk sensibly about guns . . ." is an often heard mantra from those who want to be the only ones who determine what is sensible and who will cry "nonsense" about what we may see as "sensible."rwg3 wrote:True it wasn't a fact piece, but what struck me was that one of the "opinionators" for the paper took a fairly rational and balanced stance on the issue of gunownership and open carry. I have corresponded with Jackie Floyd on gun issues over and over, and she comes off as almost sympathetic to our side, but the veneer rubs thin from time to time and the truth shines through.

I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.
