Pitiful. Once again, an anti-gun lib has stepped out of the role they are being paid for into one of a political commentator. It completely threw off the rest of the game for me. The sad thing is, many mindless watchers out there were probably shaking their heads in agreement.
No doubt this was a tragedy. However, blaming the gun, instead of the thug / gangsta mentality that is so prevalent in many sports today is just crazy. As others have mentioned, Belcher may have had other issues that drove him to do this. Take away the gun, he would use a knife from the kitchen. Take away the knife and he could have easily strangled her. Shame on you Bob Costas for trying to score political points from a tragedy.

For a second I thought Keith Olbermann was back.
I'm disappointed, I had always liked Bob Costas.
As a friend pointed out, there was a Cleveland Browns grounds crew employee who hung himself at their facility. . . I guess we'll all be waiting for Bob to issue a supplemental rant about ropes.

Re: Bob Costas anti-gun rant
When as a country did we stop accepting responsibility for our actions?
It's not football, the guns, the drugs or the alcohol's fault. The responsibility lies solely in the young man that took the life of his girlfriend and himself. Period. Passing the blame on anything other than the man that held the gun is just perpetuating the lack of responsibility. Makes me sick that as a country we push blame on anything and everyone other than the actual person responsible.

Here's the best response I've read to the Costas/Whitlock ignorance...

Gentlemen: I see that you have chosen to use the horrific crime of the murder of Kasandra Perkins to express your belief that guns are the problem, not the men who wield them. I am utterly certain that you believe that you have the moral high ground on this matter. I am equally certain that such a belief is appallingly wrong, not to mention terribly misogynistic. Why do I say this? Because had your desires on gun control been in place, I would not be alive to be writing this now...............

BY MARK BOWES
Gun-related violent crime in Virginia has dropped steadily over the past six years as the sale of firearms has soared to a new record, according to an analysis of state crime data with state records of gun sales.
The total number of firearms purchased in Virginia increased 73 percent from 2006 to 2011. When state population increases are factored in, gun purchases per 100,000 Virginians rose 63 percent.
But the total number of gun-related violent crimes fell 24 percent over that period, and when adjusted for population, gun-related offenses dropped more than 27 percent, from 79 crimes per 100,000 in 2006 to 57 crimes in 2011.
The numbers appear to contradict a long-running popular narrative that more guns cause more violent crime, said Virginia Commonwealth University professor Thomas R. Baker,................

Re: Bob Costas anti-gun rant
Watching the game I was surprised when rant came, it was totally not necessary and inappriopriate given that this is a football game. The reason why guys like Costas and the media in general does this is becuase they go unopposed. Nothing will happen to him nor the network and thus the bashing of guns and "gun community" will continue until we turn off the TV or watch the game on mute.

and if O.J. Simpson didn't own knives, Nicole would still be alive. What I believe is, if he didn’t possess/own a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

Armed not dangerous but potentially lethal.

I was so taken back by his bold claim. That could be the most ignorant part of the whole monologue.Jaguar wrote: But basically Costas said "he knows" if the KC linebacker did not have a gun, him and his wife would still be alive. Wow, sports casters are psychics.
