Is walmart holding out on ammo?

Bought the last 4 boxes of 30-30 my wal-mart had in stock. They had some .40 cal stuff on hand and .357 but no 9mm or .45

Even if they have it, having to hunt someone down to open the case is too hideously annoying for me to go there just for that.

I am nearly at that point myself. A couple times in the past I just gave up and went home. Last two times I had to find someone to call someone to bring someone to the counter. I think you're right, it just might not be worth the hassle.

I was at a nearby Wal-Mart this afternoon and checked the sporting goods counter while there. They had some larger rifle, shotgun ammo, 2 or 3 boxes of 38, 1 box of 357, 2 value packs of Remington 380, a box of Remington 45 FMJ in the lower cabinet. Then I looked up at an upper shelf at about eye level and there were about 10 boxes of PPU 380 ($17.XX), 3 boxes of PPU 9mm ($14.XX) and a box or 2 of either 40 or 45 (PPU). No 22 RF remaining and they don't know when they will get more. The gun cabinet was COMPLETELY empty.
I chatted with the SA for a minute and he said the past month has been "stupid". He said if they put out one single shot shotgun it sells within an hour. While I was there he answered a phone call and had to tell the caller repeatedly that they had no .223, 5.56, or any kind of "assault rifles". Everyone wants him to check in the back and he said they have put out everything they have. There's nothing in the back. Having worked at Wal-Mart for a short time as an unloader/stocker I believe him.

it's easy to get someone to come to the gun counter in my wal mart. Just start dry firing the air soft guns and someone comes running thinking your going to steal or break something

not that I would do or recommend that.

Stopped at the Lancaster Walmart today - plenty of WWB .40 100 round boxes.

Stopped at the Desoto Walmart this morning - plenty of the Winchester collector .22 500 round boxes.

Bought 500 rounds of the .40 and 5000 rounds of the .22 (the wooden collector boxes are pretty neat).

I think you hit on it there. Too many people asking. Can't look in the back every time. If they wanted to be mean, they would put you on hold for 10 minutes to "go check" while they keep doing something else.

The small local gun shop said they used to do waiting lists and stuff, but too many people would get upset saying they didn't get called or think they ought to be able to wait a week to show up.

Speaking of the people trying to buy up cheap ammo for resale, I was wondering how much of the mag and ammo buying spree a couple weeks ago was profiteers buying cases of mags expecting to resell later.

During the last "ammo shortage" a couple years back, I know for a fact that there was at least one local gun store buying ammo at the Walmart on spring creek and 75. The guy working the sporting goods counter noticed there were two guys that were coming in each and every morning looking to buy up the ammo from the night stockings. He said he realized who one them was when he saw him working at one of our local gun stores. The clerk said it bothered him, but he could do nothing about it. Shortly after he told me this story, wallyworld started putting limits on how much ammo any customer could purchase.

In other news, a feller working at academy right next door said they had a couple guys buying them out and selling the ammo at gun shows for very hefty profits. The gun show guys didn't try to hide what they were doing and academy did nothing to stop them. I suppose it really isn't academy's place to regulate how much ammo anyone buys or what the buyer chooses to do with it.

I agree. If I were in the situation of working gun shows and ammo supplies were such that buying from academy or Walmart were my options for stock, I would do it with no guilt at all.

I was at walmart in pflugerville earlier. They had most calibers in stock, although I wanted a box of .22 and they only had 50 round packs. I wanted 500 or 550.

I've been tempted to get a night stocking job there just to get the inside track on when ammo comes in.

They should just put up a sign like the one at the Dick's at La Cantera which said "Due to increased demand customers may only purchase 6 boxes of ammo at a time. Thank you for your understanding." The shelves were empty anyway and I don't buy ammo from Dick's but I was desperate.

I had a conversation with a walmart employee that I know- he said they are only getting a couple boxes in every couple days, where they used to get ammo in every night. I don't think he was lying- I've known him a while. He said there are about 8-9 guys that swing in every morning on their way to work checking to see if any came in. (if so they buy all 22, 9, 45, 223, that gets delivered- no limit)

I think if you are fortunate enough to live in a specific area without a bunch of people that shoot then you may have a walmart with ammo nearby. I think all the rural walmarts are picked clean.
