I am so confused about what to do with CHL class. I am schedule for Jan. 12th, and not sure what I need to do, take the class then go to pay the State (which I think is to high and stupid) and mail everything in or go to the State first. Not sure if this is even worth it. I think it is. any suggestions?

If you want to get your CHL, apply on-line before you take the class. Either way you have to pay the state of Texas for your license. What is the source of your confusion? What makes you think that the fee is "too high and stupid" and not "even worth it"?

Paying the State of Texas now, or after you take your class, won't change the time it takes for them to do thier work and to issue your CHL.
if it was me, I would take the class, as you are not sure if it is worth it or not, then decide if it is worth it.
At least if, for you, it isn't worth it, you are only out the class fee and not both.

I am with Teamless. If you are not convinced you are going to apply for the license, then take the class first, so you can make an informed decision.
If you know that you will get the license, then do the online application first. Then all you have to do after the class is send in your class completion paperwork, and wait on the state.

gguess, I assume you own a handgun. If you do, definitely take the class. the information covered in that class is invaluable, even if you don't plan on carrying a handgun in public. As far as the CHL license, I believe it is invaluable as well. If you do things like buying/selling on craigslist or any private transaction making you have to meet someone you don't know, being legally armed in public is a must.
Just my opinion. At the least, take the class.
Armed not dangerous but potentially lethal.

I'm in the same boat gguess. The first thing the DPS website recommends is to read a 63 page "pamphlet" called "CHL-16." After I read it, I thought, "Great, DPS wants the only people in Texas allowed to carry to be Lawyers."
I just posted a new thread called Stepwise TXCHL in this forum, in hopes of breaking it down for Joe Everyman. Sure, we all need to know the laws, but you shouldn't have to pass the bar exam in order to be able to (legally) defend your family.

For me, the first thing I did was to apply online and pay the state, then take the class, then the fingerprints, etc. Of course I knew for sure I wanted my CHL. After taking the class I was even more resolved to follow through on the other steps. I understand that now you have the option to simply use the same photo as your DL so the passport photo step is now optional.
I'm coming up on having my CHL for a year and I carry everyday and everywhere I legally can. It's made a world of difference in the way I experience and interact with the world, and in a positive way. Obviously you have to make the decisions that are right for you. It's good to know that we have the options that we do as Texans and Americans. Our choices come with great responsibility and the fact that we have these choices should not be taken for granted. Ok, I'm rambling now, good luck and be safe!

It was worth it. As a matter of fact I filled out the State paperwork first & then took the class and am mailing my paperwork off tomorrow.
