Move to Strip Sheriffs of Arrest Authority?

Post by TexasGal »

Saw this and I'm wondering if it is the beginning of a move to strip Sheriff's of their authority as a preemptive strike against them refusing to enforce an AWB.

This is from April 2012. Don't think it has much to do with recent events.

Ah, did not see the date. The story mentions this is part of a nationwide effort to do away with county sheriffs. Whats up with that? My local sheriff does an outstanding job.

Sheriffs run the Jails and are the highest Law Enforcement Authority of the County.

Who will run the Jails? Oh,......we just let all the criminals out and that solves that! :banghead:

LA County Sheriffs office is like the 4th largest police force in the US. Gonna get rid of them?

Must be some strange provision of Delaware law. I bet Mr. Cotton or someone of his ilk could tell us why it would never work in Texas. A sheriff without arrest powers?! Unthinkable!

Delaware sheriffs are not peace officers as reckoned in Texas. They serve suhpeenees and hold court ordered foreclosure sales. Sheriff Christopher unilaterally decided upon election, that the role played by his force should be expanded, hence the AGs involvement. AG Biden did NOT strip them of police powers, they didn't have them to begin with. There have been multiple complaints from Municipal and State Police forces that he and his deputies have endangered themselves and others, destroyed and/or contaminated crime scenes, and made unlawful traffic stops.

The office of Sheriff was created constitutionally in each state and cannot be shut down at the whim of politicians. Delaware is a different beast. Their Sheriffs have never had arrest powers.

These limited powers are not unusual in the northeast, Where there are no unincorperated towns, and the sheriffs are mostly court and jail keepers.
