I know for the florida chl the texas hunter ed license qualifies for your gun proficiency, does this also work for the texas chl? Thus cutting out the range time and class qualifications?

It does? Unless they changed hunter's ed a lot in the past 15 years, there was no shooting... so I wonder why it would serve as such for purposes of a chl, which (in almost all cases) would use an entirely different weapon, even if you did shoot in hunter's ed.

If you look at the florida chl requirements any State hunter certification qualifies for gun proficiency, and with texas hunter ed you have a "field day" which is live fire at a gun range that you must complete in order to acquire the cert. yes its a different type of fire arm all together, but i guess they just want you to have some form of training with fire arms.

Glad to see hunter ed is improved from when I took it... it was a colossal waste of time, akin to defensive driving, when I took it. (almost 20 years ago) Still it must be pretty new as I know several who have taken it in the past few years with no "field day" that I heard about.

"Traditional" Texas Hunter Ed. class requirements remain a minimum of 10 hours over a minimum of 2 days - with shooting not necessarily required.

An "optional" approved method since 1999 is "home study" plus a "field day" - where shooting IS required (altho it does not have to be very much to comply: we use Ruger 10/22s).

TX Hunter Ed. and TX CHL involve totally different lesson plans, with Hunter ed. a "once in a lifetime" certification and 100% national reciprocity.
