Texas Schools May Soon Offer Gun Safety Classes

Post by Kythas »

Rep James White has introduced a bill in the Texas legislature that would allow school districts to offer gun safety classes as part of their curriculum.

Schools used to have these classes regularly decades ago. I think it's a great idea.

Same here. But it was the early seventies and it was in Texas.

It's a good idea ONLY if as the article says, "CHL instructors or LEO" teach it. I can only imagine what kind of propaganda the liberal wing nuts that run most of our schools today would be pushing.

Generally agree with you but your brush is really wide. Let's not forget that there are thousands of good teachers and principals trying to do their best - and then there are those who are promoting a liberal/anti-church slant on everything. One other thought is that is this just another area we are turning over to the educational system that should belong at home?

I think it is a great idea as long as they stick to gun safety. Nothing else. I think also needs to be repeated at different age levels. Small kids it just needs to be don't touch, leave the area, and tell an adult.

Thats great news. I know of a school teacher who is taking off work today to take her class. Glad we're thinking logically in Texas.

I disagree..High school kids being taught..They are still to young and immature to handle them in my opinion.. I wouldn't want a 16 year old handling a gun by himself.. Yes, I know in the school of course a LEO, but think after class the kid is going to go find a gun and show off and end up shooting someone.

I don't buy into the theory that ignorance is safer than education. I took a hunter safety course when I was 15 taught by by my school system. It seems as though we were safer because of it. Unfortunately we lost a classmate when I was in the 4th grade because one of the kids was playing with guns. We did not have any gun safety classes at that young of a age. Perhaps if the school system had adopted an Eddy Eagle type program that child would now be facing retirement and grandchildren.

If the kids have access to guns today, why would they be more likely to play with them after having a safety class?

I guess I just feel the kids will end up shooting someone in school. I just don't trust any of them under 18 with a gun. Really more of 21, but 18 is the youngest I would accept.

there are literally millions of kids who hunt with their parents and have been taught gun safety at young ages. There is no data to support this causing a kid to find a gun and shoot someone.

Even if there was, how many thousands of gun related accident do you potentially avoid annually with children that happen to find a gun?

Is there something that clicks in your brain on the 18th or 21st birthday that I'm unaware of? If that were the case, I suppose there would be no crimes committed by any adult.

Isn't is illegal to provide a minor (unsupervised) access to a firearm?
