Ft. Bend Co.: Boy shot near gun range
Ft. Bend Co.: Boy shot near gun range
In Fort Bend County (south of Houston), Saturday, a 9-year-old boy was reportedly shot in the leg. The incident occurred "near" a "gun range."
The boy is expected to recover.

Something isn't right with this story...
I say there's more to this story then being told. I could be wrong but, my gut tells this is't the full or true story behind what happened.
Did they hear other shots or just the two? did they know they were "near" a shooting range?went for a walk with his grandfather in the 3900 block of Nails Road, a rural part of the county near Fulshear, around 4 p.m. when the two heard a loud noise,

Could be.
I don't post every load of scrap that comes my way.

There is a lesson here.
Even if the range isn't responsible, it will be blamed.

Lol, yeah, I don't think I've ever been near or at a gun range and only heard one loud noise.
Re: Ft. Bend Co.: Boy shot near gun range
I have tried to find a shooting range around the locale of the injured boy. The only thing in the way of shooting is OSP which is 5 miles away in Fulshear. It's a shotgun training entity from what I see on the website and I can't tell if they even have a range. It appears they teach at clubs and ranges.

The 2nd Amendment Shooting Center is nearby. Nails Road is about 2km away (about 1 & 1/4 miles). Refer to the thread on the Garland Shooting Range to see if that distance is plausible. The second question would be what sort of noise would you hear from a gun range over a mile away? I suspect none.puma guy wrote:I have tried to find a shooting range around the locale of the injured boy. The thing in the way of shooting is OSP which is 5 miles away in Fulshear. You could here it about as clearly as popcorn popping in your next-door neighbor's kitchen with the windows shut. You could hear more clearly across water or open prairie, less across woods or hills. I actually checked this out.baldeagle wrote:... what sort of noise would you hear from a gun range over a mile away? I suspect none.
Keeping in mind that rifle bullets leave the muzzle around five times the speed of sound, you would hear the report after being hit, if you were still listening.

Yeah, and they say they heard a loud noise, then shortly AFTER he fell down. Don't think the noise was related.seamusTX wrote:You could here it about as clearly as popcorn popping in your next-door neighbor's kitchen with the windows shut. Re: Ft. Bend Co.: Boy shot near gun range
For the sake of discussion, assuming the news report is accurate, they could have heard a shot before the shot that hit the boy.
I've never been shot, but I rather suspect that you wouldn't hear a shot that hit you. People have been shot and not noticed until someone else pointed out that they were bleeding.
A while back I posted a news story about a guy who went to the doctor because he had chronic headaches, and the cause was a bullet in his head. Must have been quite a party.

Re: Ft. Bend Co.: Boy shot near gun range
Yes, I would agree. There was a M*A*S*H* episode called 'Sometimes You Hear the Bullet' based on a novel that was being written called 'You Never Hear the Bullet'. The later is gonna be the case if the shot is immediately fatal.seamusTX wrote:For the sake of discussion, assuming the news report is accurate, they could have heard a shot before the shot that hit the boy.

Re: Ft. Bend Co.: Boy shot near gun range
Your conscious perception of a sensation—let's say a pinprick—occurs about half a second after the physical event. This can be demonstrated by brain waves. Your entire view of what you consider "the present" is 500 milliseconds in the past.
Faster reactions, such as boxers or fencers have, are not mediated at the conscious level.
BTW, for the same reason, shooters sometimes find they have an empty magazine and can't remember pulling the trigger ten or fifteen times. That part of the brain goes on auto-pilot.

Re: Ft. Bend Co.: Boy shot near gun range

Shooting ranges were not obvious from Google maps near the location pointed out in the Chronicle story. A request for shooting ranges near that location and Google said none.
The Second Amendment shooting range is way off this map, way off.

Here it is located on this larger map.
