Travel case to take on a plane

I did a quick search and didn't see anything on this . . . . but I could have missed it so apologies in advance.

It looks like I will need to fly and take my Springfield XD service and XDs with extra magazines. What type of rigid case would your recommend? I stopped by Cabxyz and they have Pelican and their own brand of hard cases. Not sure if those are the best or not.

It appears these cases have a basic foam insert which is okay but would love to have an option to get them cut-to-fit the weapons. Has anyone done it or know of the types of vendors in the DFW area who can do it? I've monkeyed around before with an electric turkey carving knife and foam but I'd like something better quality than that.

Whenever I have flown with firearms I have used a Pelican case. Great stuff.

My key criteria are that (a) it locks securely without a TSA lock, and that (b) it's metal, so they cannot see inside it with the xray machine.

I don't know about the Pelican - whether it meets these criteria. If it does, then adding to the references of the others above, it may be a great choice.

I have had no problems putting the pistol in the case it came in, which usually has room to a couple of magazines. Ammo goes in a factory box in the luggage.

Whatever you do, make absolutely certain that you have no firearms paraphernalia in your carry on, etc. There is no fooling around with this stuff, and great caution is advised to avoid embarrassment and worse. You can read the account of my carelessness on this Forum.

I use a gun vault and take mine with me every week. It's pretty simple and have never had an issue. You will want to check with the airline on their policy and the TSA's website.

Not metal but really sturdy. I used double non-TSA locks. Pelican has a case lock that works really well with their cases.

My cases were big enough to keep ammo in them too. The Pelicans had foam that I trimmed to hold pistol, mags, and ammo box.

Bought mine (smallest size) at Academy for ~$20.
It comes with a coated steel cable that I loop around the inside of my luggage frame so that the gun case cannot be separated from the rest of the luggage. It might get stolen, but not without the whole bag. I figure that's the best I can do once the bag is out of my control.

When I'm not flying with it, I loop the cable around the base of my car seat and store the box itself under an over-sized floor mat (no room under my seat). More secure than the glove box.

The above link is for the middle size (IIRC). This one will hold a full sized 1911.
They have them with combo locks instead of keys, but I prefer keys for this purpose.
