At least the article said he was not a CHL.
So I guess if your carrying a gun and your inside your car and not a CHL, you should disarm before getting out. But I guess you would also need to request permission first.
But I guess the first thing is you don't get drunk, drive and carry.

Re: DWI stop nets two automatic rifles
Alcohol issues aside, how were they modified to be machine guns? I looked, and if those two guns in the car are the ones the article is talking about, I saw two AR15s that were only remarkable in that they both still had an A2 stock. It's my understanding that an auto sear and FCG will not install into an AR lower receiver without some machining to hog out the room for it. Without either firing or disassembling the guns, how would an officer tell they were full auto? Not saying it's bogus......just curious how the officers would have known.

Function check while holding the trigger blade rearward and cycling the bolt - the trigger will reset and drop the firing pin each time w/o the actual trigger blade moving. Works to check full auto and 3rd burst functionality.

Their safety had three positions? The Annoyed Man wrote:Without either firing or disassembling the guns, how would an officer tell they were full auto? Not saying it's bogus......just curious how the officers would have known.
I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, nor should anything I say be taken as legal advice. If it is important that any information be accurate, do not use me as the only source.

If it was illegally modified with parts that used to be sold at the gun shows, there is no 3 position on the safety.Dave2 wrote:Their safety had three positions? The Annoyed Man wrote:Without either firing or disassembling the guns, how would an officer tell they were full auto? You mill out the receiver a bit and put in the part for full auto. And you take out the part to go back to semi-auto. It is not something you can do quickly.
And even if you could (and throw the part away quickly) you still have a modified receiver that makes it illegal.
My older Brother once had one.

Good info gigag04. Wonder how many LEO's actually know this? Since it was a DWI stop, I assume the driver told them.

Someone would have to do work to modify the ARs to be full auto. They not only need work done to the lower receiver, and the proper trigger group parts, but also a full-auto bolt carrier. You have to know what you are doing to make it all work, unlike what the antis make it sound like. I've posted a photo of the bolt carriers for reference.

A full auto carrier alone, however, does not a full auto weapon make.K.Mooneyham wrote:Someone would have to do work to modify the ARs to be full auto. My AR has a 'full auto' bcg, because it's more robust and holds up better than a 'semi auto' one.
Just keep that in mind ;)
IANAL, YMMV, ITEOTWAWKI and all that.

Re: DWI stop nets two automatic rifles
Did not mean to imply that it did. I understand that your full-auto-type bolt carrier is perfectly legal, in and of itself. Just pointing out that it takes many things to turn a standard, semi-auto AR into what the BATFE defines as a "machinegun". Can it be done? Most certainly, but it takes knowledge and effort, not "5 minutes, a paperclip and a rubberband" like some make it out to be. Patrick Sweeney debunks that myth in his Gun Digest Book of the AR-15.dicion wrote:A full auto carrier alone, however, does not a full auto weapon make.K.Mooneyham wrote:Someone would have to do work to modify the ARs to be full auto. Fly back to Lebanon, and AK and AR and any Military issued rifle is a SA/FA (found in each other house). The restriction on FA is non-sense gun control law.
FA is over-rated, a lot of noise and faster depletion of Ammo and the only time is useful is in suppressive fire. The later is best suited for squad-level light-weight machine gun.

Re: DWI stop nets two automatic rifles
I tend to agree with you, Beiruty, about the usefulness of FA. My pals who were in the Army and served in Iraq said they seldom fired their M-4s or M-16s on auto/burst. Not good fire discipline and it wasted ammo. Steady, aimed semi-auto usually got the job done a lot better for them.Beiruty wrote:Fly back to Lebanon, and AK and AR and any Military issued rifle is a SA/FA (found in each other house).
