Some have debated whether or not dogs should be shot if they are approaching in a aggressive manner.

A 62-year-old school teacher, who was headed to see her grandchildren when she was attacked, will need several surgeries, according to her daughter.

The other woman’s arm was bitten to the bone, a police source said.
The answer is yes.

Even if you don't hit them, the noise may be enough to make them run away
The dogs were so aggressive, a police officer tried to shoot them. Both managed to run home to their master, who still was confused about the entire incident.
Even pepper spray is better than nothing.

Received an email from our HOA that two large aggressive dogs were seen in the neighborhood. Haven't let the boys walk our dog without me since and of course I bring along my little friend.

Technically, Carrying a M16 with a M203 down the public street would be legal, assuming you had the appropriate tax stamps and such to own them. :thumbs2:

Having worked k9's many years, I know the damage some dogs can do. Dogs can cause serious bodily injury or even death. We had a case where 2 rotts turned on their owner and killed her. Another officer had to shoot the dogs. I shot a dog before at work that attacked me. While some may say we do, I do not get paid to be attacked by a 98 lb dog when I can protect myself. Fortunately there were 2 civilian witnesses so I didn't receive any grief as they both saw the dog attack me. I have sprayed a lot of dogs with OC as well. While it is better then nothing, just like humans, it does not always work on the dogs. We used to bring a shot gun with bean bag rounds on warrant service and yard searches. They are good for pushing the skittish pit's back, but how many can carry a 870 around with bean bags? Not practical.

Many years ago I carried one of these. Ok, it carried me, but I digress..., 3000 RPM 7.62 or 400 RPM 40mm grenade. Your choice.

Dog approaching me in an angry, threatening, and aggressive manner, I'll shoot.

I am not required to "receive the first bite" before protecting myself.
