USS Chris Kyle has a much better sound to it - and utterly appropriate. A fighting ship should be named after a fighter, not some political hack. Ever.

I predict balance problems that will result in this ship leaning left.

This! If they wanted to name a tender or some other support ship, I would have less of a problem. This is a fighting ship. It needs to be named after a warrior and not a politician/victim.

I am a Navy veteran and I am appalled. Sadly, not too surprised. When all the ads started saying the Navy is a "Global force for good" I nearly threw up. So glad I spent all but about 12 months of my 12+ years in the Navy assigned to Marine Corps units.

WTH has happened to this dumbed down, ultra-PC military? If we are ever invaded, I don't like our chances.

The Jimmy Carter SSN23 is a fast attack boat. Last Seawolf class boat to be built.

Naming ships after women, female pilots, soon there will be female SEALS (it's coming!)...... there have been a lot of changes in the Navy since I enlisted 50 years ago this June, and many more to come. Back then, I never dreamed of seeing a gorgeous CPO, and I have, or being hugged by a Commander (O-5), and I have, my daughter in law now on the Reagan.

when I was in the best thing they even did was allow ladies to serve on combatant ships.......THEY FREAKED out and hated it, lots left the service earlier than planned
but the best thing was the creature comfort changes they made on some ships . we started getting thicker mattresses, better food
and it was so nice going to chow and smelling a good smelling woman sitting next to you vice freds nasty armpit sweat
finally we men started getting those coveted shore duty spots previously reserved for woman because they couldn't go floating in warships
I made sure to thank them often as they headed off to deployment and i had a chance to enjoy must deserved down time

best joke ever was a ran into a female torpedo mate...she had over 15 years in and had never served at sea. (we had a spirited discussion about how she was screwing up a few good billets) ..hmmm torpedoes are on ships and subs..... she was stationed at signolea navy base... saw her about 5 years after the combatant rule and she was sooooooo humble about sea time...seems being stuck on a tin can for 6 or 8 months really changed her perspective

I was never in the Navy and that makes me sick to see that ship named thus. I am sorry for those who are forced to serve on her.

Unfortunately those called to serve on this ship will be young men or women with an average age of 19-22. Knowing that it will be a couple of years before it is built and put to sea, those who might serve on her are currently in high school and probably cannot tell you who the ship is named after since there is no video game named after Ms. Giffords.

And then there is the propensity for sailors serving in ships to refer to them by a nickname.

The USS Zellars was, to us, the "Zippin Z"; the "Z-boat"; or "Captain Crunch and his Bunch."

I am having a wonderful time imagining what the sailors' nicknames will be for their home away from home.

Quite so. How in the world does doing nothing outside being in the wrong place at the wrong time make one a hero?

It makes me think of flying the flag at half-staff. Every time I turn around - every time someone halfway famous stubs his toe or someone makes an ugly face at a school or church - they're flying the flag at half-staff. It's getting to the point where we might as well just keep it there all the time.
