Gun shop that sold to Nancy Lanza loses license

Post by MotherBear »

I didn't see this posted yet, and thought it was interesting:

Authorities raided the store for undisclosed reasons shortly after the December school shootings in which Adam Lanza killed 20 first-graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
[The owner's] wife, Shelley Clemens, said Friday that she and her husband still don't know why the ATF revoked his firearms license. She said the store remains open selling ammunition and other items while LaGuercia appeals the revocation.

"They just came in the store after Sandy Hook, raided the store and took away the license," she said, referring further questions to her husband.
Forgive my ignorance, but at some point will they be required to disclose why the license was revoked? If there was some sort of violation meriting it of course I support the revocation, but it would also be easy to see the store as a convenient scapegoat.

I was also interested by the description of the Lanzas' home as "packed with weapons and ammunition." I get this Hoarders-like vision of a house stacked full of boxes of ammunition and weapons lining the walls, which doesn't exactly line up with what was revealed in the search warrant.

I thought even before the Sandy Hook shooting under Connecticut law you had to get permission of the local Sheriff or Chief of Police, just to get permission to purchase a gun.

"Certificate of Eligibility for Pistol and Revolvers or Long Guns or Ammunition required to purchase handguns, long guns or ammunition. Applicants must complete an approved safety course, and pass a NICS background check prior to issuance of certificate. Certificate of Eligibility valid for five years. "

Seems being in the gun store business in Connecticut would be a tough sell.

That store has had numerous problems keeping on top of their inventory. http://southwindsor.patch.com/groups/po ... n-669efc4e" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Further investigation revealed that Marsh had an AR-15 assault rifle stashed at a Hartford hotel where he had been staying. According to East Windsor Det. Matthew Carl, the AR-15 had been stolen from Riverview Sales, whose employees were unaware that the weapon was missing.
Marsh, who, according to relatives, is mentally ill, had previously received a two-year suspended sentence after it was discovered in June 2011 that he had stolen 12 firearms from Riverview Sales. Store employees were not aware that Marsh had taken 12 guns from the store in the first incident until they were alerted in June 2011.
About five years ago, there were another three dozen guns from the store that were unaccounted.

Ahhh... thanks for the information -- that makes more sense. So it's not unlikely that the connection to Nancy Lanza led to a closer look, but that what was found was legitimately problematic.

Guess I need to work on my investigative skills. :oops:
