What to do while bullets are short?

Post by Hamourkiller »

Guys and Gals, here is what I have been doing to make my reloading supplies last longer.

1- Any cartridge I can make cast bullets work in, I am doing so. As an example I recently worked up a load in my 30-30 using a cast 165 gr FN bullet with gas check. I got 2150 FPS with out leading. This freed up 4000 170 gr RN Remington jacketed bullets to be used in my M1 Garand and M1A if needed.

2- I have also procured molds that allow me to use cast bullets in my Lever action carbines in 357 and 44 mag. This allows me to deer hunt and not need to shoot up my hard to replace jacketed SFN and HPT

Broke out an old 38 special 148 gr wad cutter mold and introduced my son to shooting these with 3 and 4 grs bullseye, which equals 18,666 loads out of an 8 lb jug. (3grs makes a good target load and 4 grs is a decent self defense load) We have plenty of lead lube so why waste the jacketed bullets.

So I suggest you use cast when and where you can.

I love having the independence of casting all my bullets.

:thumbs2:

Last weekend, I cast about a thousand .45 ACP and about a thousand .40 S&W. This weekend, I'll do another couple thousand.

Yep, I like to have a year's worth of bullets cast and lubed before it gets too hot. Like to have a lot of ammo loaded as well, although I have been known to handload even though it is hot.

You know it's too how when your bullet lube melts on the bullets..!!!! :mad5

It's perfect right now for casting, I need to get my back side in gear and cast more.
But been busy with general repairs around the property & fallen dead trees from the last drought and more standing..!!

Gotta love it ;-)
