Need Roofer Recommendation

Post by Abraham »

In Galveston county.

There are many roofers available, but picking one at random isn't the way I'd like to decide who gets the job.

That said, can anyone recommend a quality roofer?

Thanks!

I'd start with the BBB. I have a roofer that did my house on Crystal Beach after Rita. I gave him lots of work from aquaintences and friends down there. Ike took the house in 2008. He did a good job at a reasonable price, but I'm loathe to recommend him now after he recently gave a friend a price just to do an estimate. He has got too big for his britches IMHO.

A small time contractor I've been doing business with for years won't do free quotes anymore either. (he did give me a roofer reference)

He stated, with the high cost of gas, time and effort plus not getting enough jobs for the quote effort, he now charges $35.00 for a quote.

In the past, he said a lot of folks were simply looky loos (my words) and cost him money he couldn't afford.

Since he's invoked a cost for a quote, he gets a lot more of the jobs he does quote - though he did tell me he doesn't get nearly as many quote requests as he once did, understandably...saying it was actually a good thing. The folks that do call him are serious...

He's a trustworthy guy who does good work, but I have to say I was surprised when he told me about charging now for a quote, but it's also hard for me to argue with his logic and experience...

I used Bay Area Roofers out of Pearland for a roof repair and I was pleased with their work.

Ordinarily I could understand charging to cover some travel expenses, especially with gasoline costs, but besides letting this guy stage his material under my house on the pad and letting him keep his trash trailers parked at my house I gave him a key to the house so he wouldn't have to drive back and forth to the mainland during the week. I've known him for years as was married to my wife's niece, though now divorced. Oh! Well!

Make sure they are properly insured. Insist on seeing certificate of insurance.

I used Robert Juelich Roofing out of Alvin. They did a great job in a timely manner. He even helped me years later with a windstorm certificate issue that I had.

We replaced our roof in 2009 with State Roofing. I was very pleased with their work. The team was quick, thorough, and hard-working.

Their estimator checked our roof once solo. The second time he brought a supervisor and together they marked trouble areas for the insurance inspector. He came the third time when the insurance inspector was doing her job so he could help point out areas of concern, and again so we could select roofing colors and options. He came again during the roofing job to make sure they work working well, and again after the job was completed to check our satisfaction.

The team did a great job - full ridge vents, repaired decking where required - they even cleaned out my gutters from the leaves and debris my trees provide.

We selected State for a number of reasons:
  • We did our homework to check the solvency of each company up for consideration (some don't pay their bills, and the materials supplier then makes a claim against the house after the job is done)
  • They were very proactive in helping us through the insurance labyrinth.
  • We saw the job their teams did on several of our neighbors' homes - thorough, quick, and good workmanship.
  • It was lump-sum quoted. If they get in and find no decking needed replacement, it cost $XXX. If they had to replace some or all of the decking, the cost was the same. We knew up front that there would be no surprises at billing time - and they were true to their word. I saw them remove and replace a significant amount of decking, and our bill never changed.
  • Strong recommendations from a lot of neighbors in our neighborhood (we have a message board similar to this one). When I heard the same recommendation repeated by many others, I trusted that recommendation.
