Getting to be fairly common and the nice thing is (at least from my limited (3 times, now) experience - ya don't bring presents, cause ya don't know what to buy (i.e. which colors)!. More a reason to celebrate with the expecting couple than anything else.

According to my daughters and wife it's fairly common. We attended one for our own daughter back in February to reveal that we're having our first grandson in June. There are no gifts required at the parties from what I've been told. It makes it easier for gift selection for baby showers is the logic I'm given. Our other daughter's sister in law had one recently as well. The newer generations have come up with all sorts of things. My generations didn't rent stretch limos and spend ridiculous amounts of money on proms in some kind of weird competition like nowadays. A tux and formal dress, a dance and a nice dinner with your sweetie was the extent of it.

When my first was born, everyone was clucking and gasping over the novelty that we had attended a Lamaze class and I was going to be present for the festivities instead of smoking cigars impatiently in the waiting room. It was all just TOO modern!

The only person who had any idea about the gender was the in-laws' next door neighbor who dangled a ring on a thread over my then wife's tummy and guessed wrong.

He's the same age as Jack Benny now.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Oh, I thought a bunch of English majors were getting together:
Definition of GENDER
1
a : a subclass within a grammatical class (as noun, pronoun, adjective, or verb) of a language that is partly arbitrary but also partly based on distinguishable characteristics (as shape, social rank, manner of existence, or sex) and that determines agreement with and selection of other words or grammatical forms
"Journalism, n. A job for people who flunked out of STEM courses, enjoy making up stories, and have no detectable integrity or morals."

I must admit, my first thought when I read the title was along the lines of others as well....

I haven't heard of such. I must travel in the wrong circles. And I am not THAT old....getting older, but not too old yet.
