The Louisiana Purchase was one of the first significant exercises of federal power that was not explicitly granted by the Constitution. Nevertheless, Pres. Jefferson showed great foresight. France was eliminated as a power in North America, and the U.S. more than doubled its area.

1904 - The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, better known as the St. Louis World's Fair, opened. The fair was also the locale of the Olympics that year.

The most lasting legacy of this event is the foods that became popular after so many people were exposed to them, including Dr Pepper, the hamburger, the hot dog, and the ice cream cone.

1945 - Hitler committed suicide as Soviet troops marched into Berlin.

1970 - Pres. Nixon announced that he had sent U.S. troops into Cambodia to attack North Vietnamese and Viet Cong military bases there. This news caused widespread unruly demonstrations that closed hundreds of colleges in the U.S.

I wasn't sure then and I'm not sure now that many people really understood what they were protesting.

On this day in 1789, George Washington took office as the first President of the United States under the new Constitution. He took the oath of office in Federal Hall, on Wall Street in New York, which was the capital at that moment.

Elections were originally held in March, and it took quite a while for the electors to assemble in person and Congress to ratify the results. Every procedure was being done for the first time. However, there was no question that Washington would be the first president.

I don't know how I missed this the first time around.

I heard on the radio this morning that Hitler got married the day before he committed suicide. The radio guy was saying that Eva Braun must have really been something...

I don't really give anything that can be said in this forum about Hitler's personal life. Supposedly he was a vegetarian, non-drinker, non-smoker, and and general health nut.
