Moving to OK- how to keep texas chl

Well, it looks like I might have to do the unthinkable. Don't worry, I don't plan on staying there for too many years ;). Once I find a place to live, I plan on getting an OK DL and OK Chl to be on the safe side.

I would still like to keep my texas chl if possible during my time there. It is my understanding that once I update the address on my texas chl to the new OK address my OK DL it becomes a non-resident permit. Is this correct?

Also, will I still be eligible to re-new my license when the time comes? Obviously I will have to come back to texas for the renewal class, which I won't mind.

Lastly, for anyone who has gone through this, is there a better way of handling the chl situation? Appreciate the help!

Sounds like ya got it pretty much figured out. Just do the form online and pay DPS the 25 bucks when ya get new Okie address. Actually, many parts of OKC are ok. I was born in Elk City, son went to OU and got a great job in OKC.

When we moved to Wyoming my wife and I both kept ours. I had to renew while there but it wasn't a problem, we made it back before my wife's expired. We'll be doing the same when we move to Missouri in a few weeks.

Hardest part for us was you couldn't change your address to an out of state address online. Not sure if they've changed that, but you had to provide a photocopy of your new DL when doing so.

The reverse is also true. I started with a non-resident Texas CHL using my Ohio driver license. When I became an official resident and got my Texas DL, I had to update my Texas CHL address via mail because the online change could not process a driver license change.

To open another can of worms, you might not even have to come back to Texas to take the renewal class, as there is going to be change in the law regarding renewals - like no class!! Of course, we haven't seen the final 'verdict' from DPS as to what the scope will be of renewals (online test, no shooting?, etc.), but I have a feeling you won't be coming back to Texas to take a test. My opinion only, no facts to back anything up 'cept for the passage of the bill in the legislature.

SB 864 - While the renewal MAY be online, what to do about range qualification? That's why I said DPS hasn't made the final verdict on how this is going to work. And because DPS hasn't made final verdict as to how things are going to go, I don't proclaim whether or not the OP will have to come back to Texas to take the renewal test. But I do know that the legislature passed a reduction in the hours of class for initial, and allows DPS the option to allow online renewal class. The actual text of the bill can be found here:

No, you'll still have to do the range quals.

All of which tells me that the OP may still have to come back to Texas for complete renewal.

I would suggest not holding your breath on that one - not for possibly a long while for any more than what DPS is currently doing. As Busy Mom said, the jury is still out on what DPS may or may not do with what has already been stated for years is possible with online classes. Heck, it typically takes DPS until at least January of the following year just to get the CHL-16s printed or even put up on their web site for new laws that are signed off on in June and go into effect on Sept. 1.

As a side note from an Okie now living in Texas. If you decide to get an Oklahoma CCL it will NOT be valid when you move back. OSBI confiscated mine when I tried to change my address to Texas.

HB 48 does away w/renewal classes and qualifications. sounds like there is a conflict between HB 48 and SB 864. :(

SB 864 was signed by the Governor on 5/24, HB48 was sent to the gov on 5/25. I suspect he will sign it too.

Chas explained this the other day. HB48 was passed last so it's language supercedes the language of SB864.
