Stock to action fit

Post by CDH »

I'm 'building' a hog rifle. The gunsmith is done with the metal work and now I'm opening up a standard bbl ADL stock to fit the heavy barrel newly installed.

How low in the stock should the action sit? Right now it looks 'about right' to my eye but I only get about 1.5 threads engagement in the front action screw. I didn't note how it sat before the much heavier barrel was installed, and I have been sanding and chiseling out wood for days...well maybe an hour at a time for 4-5 days. I'm seriously wondering if I should take a little wood out from under the front of the receiver...and yes I intend to eventually pillar bed it, but probably not right away.

1.5 threads is way too few. Do you have the barrel free floated? the problem is either in the chamber area of the barrel or the whole thing may not be inlet enough. Don't take any wood from the front ring of the action unless you are glass beding the rifle. Fit and try it's better to take too little then too much when working on a stock. Good luck and patience is a virtue. :thumbs2: AMHIK.

I agree a thread and a half is not adequate. From the picture you posted I don't think you can get the receiver any lower in the stock. The bolt handle slot in the stock is even with the action. The barrel diameter and taper should be the only change made on the stock, correct? Doesn't the action bolt mate up with the receiver near the recoil lug? :headscratch Is there something I'm missing? I suppose you could counter sink the action bolt a little or find a longer bolt?
Edit: BTW Is there a spacer bushing for the action bolt or a shoulder bolt?
