Just ask your rapist to go away

Post by TrueFlog »

An Oregon woman was brutally choked and raped after a police dispacter declined to send an officer to aid her. Instead, the dispatcher suggested, "You know, obviously, if he comes inside the residence and assaults you, can you ask him to go away?" Local police are blaming their non-response on budget cuts.

I don't know if the budgets cuts are a legitimate excuse or not, but either way, it's a terrible story. It's also a good reminder to stay armed and take responsiblity for your own safety.

It seems like it. This quote from a "stand your ground" article makes Oregon sound like a reasonably sane state.
Daniel Vice, senior attorney of the Washington D.C.-based nonprofit Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, notes that one's duty to retreat isn't just about running away, it's about one's duty to avoid altercations long before they turn deadly. Oregon law, though, encourages no such thing.

“It's certainly a reminder of Oregon's weak gun laws,” says Vice.

Actually I have read about budget cuts affecting officer response in Oregon, especially rural areas.

Folks need to arm up and ventilate the bad guys.

The dispatcher didn't decline... the rural town has only two deputies and they work only during the week and are not on call due to no funds for OT.

1600 square miles to cover with 2 LEO's.

Why anyone in the county would be unarmed is beyond my comprehension.

This article is a bit more detailed and has photos of the assailant

Something stinks: why didn't she shoot him or something, why would an English tabloid have this story ahead of a colonist publication and why would both deputies work only the Monday-Friday shift? Union overtime rules, maybe?

Not sure where they got their info from, but one of the posters to the article claimed that the woman had a felony conviction for meth and that is why she could not / did not have a gun to protect herself....

If true, this is further proof that taking 2A rights away from felons is an effective deterrent.....if your goal is to deter someone from being able to defend themselves.

What if the rapist killed his victim and burned the body. You know the famous cartoon line "dead men tell no tales" Should we ask the victim to just stop?!!!

There wasn't a State cop that could respond? And, if the deputies all work Monday through Friday, who arrested the jerk later that day? Micky Mouse?

Oregon doesn't even have a castle doctrine, although according to Oregon law she would have still be justified in shooting him because he posed "an imminent deadly threat".

This is what you get when liberals run your state. They suck all the money out until there's not even enough left to pay law enforcement, and then they demand that you pay more taxes to get protection. It's a criminal enterprise with the government stamp of approval.

Veracity still in question: Brady is denying they had anything to do with producing it.

We can't just write if off as satire or a hoax because that is truly what they believe. My only reason for skepticism is that they can only sell their nonsense by lying about their intentions so I'm inclined to doubt they'd ever be this truthful in their ads. However, I do hope they really are putting out ads like this and that they are disseminated as widely as possible. I wish the Bloomie squad and the Obama campaign would also put out ads like this.
