I love the heat but not the drought.

Not a problem. I put a cool white coating on the roof last week. Dropped the roof heat from 185 to 105, cooled the attic about 50 degrees, and the house a/c easily handles whats left over. Color me ready for a tough summer.

On Thur. we hit 109 in Gaines County according to the intergrated thermometer on my Jeep. I put the hard top back on so I could have AC, now I am seriously looking into a soft top.

What did it cost to do something like that?

Seems like ti would reduce air conditioning-related electric bill.

I haven't heard about this. It sounds like a good thing to do. According to this paper by the Washington State University the energy savings can be 35-65%. The paper also says that it can extend the life of the roof. It sounds like a win-win. It shouldn't be too expensive and sounds easy to "install". I am wondering if the HOA could have something to say about it??? White roofs???

We were looking at some houses this time last year. Being me, the first thing I checked was the garage, the second thing was the attic. The first two houses, stepped into the attic and had the typical blast of heat. The third one I hardly noticed the difference, maybe 10 degrees. Turned out it had the thermal barrier material stapled to the rafters. I am definitely having that done on the next house. We decided to stay here another two years and I'm thinking about having it done here as a selling point.

I've often thought the solution to attic heat would be to completely shade the roof. This could be done fairly cheaply (I think) by suspending something like galvanized aluminum sheets about 6" above the roof. The sheets would reflect most of the sunlight, and any absorbed heat would be removed by the airflow under the aluminum panels.

I would think this would work, but I can't answer for your homeowner's association actions when they see a bunch of ugly galvanized aluminum sheets over your roof.

Unseasonably mild weather this week in Fort Worth. I'm not complaining. After a cool spring, this is one of my favorite years ever as far as weather is concerned. Looks like we'll be approaching normalcy by next week.

Sorry, I missed your reply.

For my situation I had a black asphalt shingle roof and the sand was starting to separate from the shingles, so my decision served two purposes, extend roof life and reduce interior heat. It worked so well I just finished doing the garage roof. It used to be like an attic in there but now is comfortable.

I used white barn and fence paint. I did about 3000 square feet of roof for $500 in latex paint. The paint I used is an all in one primer and paint and dries out to a very reflective white color plus it is breathable to not trap water. Surprisingly, it looks much better than the black color it was before. I expect to recover cost in about a year. The a/c load has been greatly reduced and is about to cool the house to a lower temperature now. At night the attic used to radiate heat down into the bedrooms, Now that doesn't occur so I sleep better. I have a feeling by August I will be even more happy once those temperatures arrive.

PS: If anyone is going to try this, be sure to either consult a professional painter or buy a gallon and test it on an inconspicuous area of your roof before proceeding. I did the test on a small backyard kitchen roof first and waited until after it had rained a couple of times before proceeding with my plans.
