Father and son go ahead and do what police refuse to do due to "Health and Safety" , then get arrested for attempted murder.

I tell you, it's a very strange way of thinking going on there. I've mentioned the "Health and Safety" slogan they live by to get out of anything unpleasant, before. This is an example of what I was referring to.
As much as I love the UK, this drives me crazy.

If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you carry a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?

Re: UK police refuse to climb up to arrest thief
When I tell folks about things like this in the UK, and they've never been there or kept up with what goes on there, some think that I make the stuff up. I distinctly remember a story about a man who was staying with his mom in her apartment. Two men busted in, probably with the intent to rob the place. They beat the man pretty much senseless and left him with significant brain damage, but because he RAISED HIS HANDS to ward off the blows, the two others were either acquitted of the charges or it was reduced to next to nothing. No one in the UK is allowed to defend themselves, much less their property. THIS is the sort of thing the political left in the USA has in mind, eventually. Either the government defends you or you are left defenseless.

Here is some interesting reading on British doctrines of self-defence and case law in support.
