I wouldn't put too much faith in one article. While I do believe the event happened, I question whether it was really a Champion safe.

The Champion catalog stresses American-made all through it. My Champion Triumph has a large "Made in U.S.A" sticker on the door's edge.

Champion Has 2 manufacturing facilities in Nogales, Mexico. The Medalist, Model-T, and some Trophy models have been assembled there since 2004.
