Like many of you, my certificate expires this year.
I have taken my NRA class.
I have gone online and paid my fee and started the application for renewal.
I downloaded the Checklist and it says that I need a FAST fingerprint.
QUESTION 1.: Do we need to be fingerprinted each time we renew our instructor certificate?
QUESTION 2: If we do need to be fingerprinted again, how do we arrange it? When I applied the last time, there was a link to FAST to arrange an appointment. That link did not appear when I filled out my online forms this time.
I downloaded a CHL-90 to fill out and send in with my NRA papers. The CHL-90 has nothing to indicate that I am trying to renew as opposed to applying as a new instructor candidate.
QUESTION 3: How do I indicate on my CHL-90 that it is a renewal and not a new application?
When I printed out my receipt from my online application, the receipt said
Instructor Certification Renewal (Non License)
QUESTION 4: What does "non license" mean?
QUESTION 5: How do I schedule a renewal class? I have received no notification of any classes to be held, in spite of what we were told by the DPS lady at Charles' seminar last month.
This is all pretty confusing for me. I have tried to do what I am supposed to do, but time is running out and DPS ain't helping any.
Thanks for any advice anyone can give me.

Re: Need Help Renewing Instructor Certificate
Russ - you do NOT need to be fingerprinted. That is a problem on the form.
DPS will find you in the database and know you are a renewal.
You do not schedule the renewal class - DPS does that, and lets you know when and where.
"Non license" means this is a renewal of your instructor certificate, and not the CHL itself.
Be sure to upload the CHL 90 and your NRA certificate.

Re: Need Help Renewing Instructor Certificate
Thanks for the information. A little clarification, please.
As far as uploading the CHL-90 and NRA Certificate, the CHL-90 only has a physical mailing address. Where do I email it?
How do I know that DPS will contact me about a renewal class when they haven't contacted me about anything else? I know that they have my email address, because when I was filling out my renewal online, my correct email address popped up in the information screen.
What if they do contact me about a class, but it is at a time when I can't attend? isn't there any way to see when classes will be held, and sign up for one which I am available for? I'd hate to have to quit my paying job to attend a class.

Re: Need Help Renewing Instructor Certificate
I just renewed my CHL in July. They had me redo my prints. I am in the process like the rest of us , of renewing my Instructor Certificate. DPS sent me a letter wanting me to take my prints again.
I emailed them and the response was "Our department tried using your previous fingerprints but were unsuccessful that’s why new ones are required."
So guess what I am doing tomorrow....

Carry safe and carry when and where you can. I'm just sayin'.

Basically, join the club with the rest of us! They are having several classes throughout the state at different times. I'm a bit concerned as well as I have a full schedule this fall.RossA wrote:Thanks for the information. A little clarification, please.

Re: Need Help Renewing Instructor Certificate
Yes, if I was a conspiracy theorist, I would take all of this to mean that someone in the powers that be is trying to whittle down the number of CHL instructors, and therefore the number of CHL holders.
Demonstrated lack of communication from DPS.
Decision to enforce (after many years) requirement of NRA certification, with no apparent effort at grandfathering of existing instructors.
Delay until the last minute of scheduling of renewal classes, and delay of informing instructors of when and where those classes will be held, all while knowing that the clock is ticking on our renewals.
Not that I AM a conspiracy theorist, but it kinda makes you scratch your head a little, doesn't it?

Actually, I understood they are trying to whittle it down. I keep running into ones who didn't know about the NRA requirement and some who argue with me about it!RossA wrote:Yes, if I was a conspiracy theorist, I would take all of this to mean that someone in the powers that be is trying to whittle down the number of CHL instructors, and therefore the number of CHL holders.
