What a great name. "Independence"

I'm sure the author who won the competition and the group who selected his name were referring to the famous American Declaration of Independence and had no other meaning or double entendre in mind by selecting that name.

Better than nothing I guess, but it's a shame that "Houston" which was synonymous for control of all shuttle flights gets a "consolation" prize, while cities that had little or nothing to do with the space program get the real deal. In 1981 I was in the parking lot of Baybrook Mall in Clear Lake when the 747 with the shuttle on top made a low pass over NASA. I was stunned at the majesty of it all.

Exactly. This was pure political payback, at its finest.

I want to say that I am very proud of the folks here in Houston that are in charge. It would have been real easy to have given up after the loss of the real shuttles.

They continued to bug NASA and got the replica that actually has a real cockpit. That with the real 747 carrier mounted below and a shuttle you can go inside of, our exhibit will be the best in the world.
