Life and supplemental insurance cancelled by Obamacare

Post by The Annoyed Man »

I had the only kind of life insurance policy I could afford with The Chesapeake Life Insurance Company. I had it, just to cover any contingencies for my wife in the event of my passing. The death benefit wasn't huge, just $50K, and it included an "AFLAC-type" of supplemental health insurance. I got a letter today from Chesapeake. They are canceling the policy as of 12/31/13 because of Obamacare. So I will lose both my life insurance policy and my supplemental health insurance....the ONLY insurance I could afford....because of the fascist dictator in the oval office, and his fascist cronies on the left side of the aisle.

My government is now my enemy.

Sorry to hear that, TAM. I hope at some point there will be enough people negatively impacted by this terrible and illegal legislation who will call on Congress to repeal or alter it. My dad passed away in 2011, but he would have lost his supplemental through the AVMA.

It's no consolation but Mrs. Oldgringo and I have lived past the age of affordable Life Insurance. Maybe somebody will do something with our carcasses before we get too ripe?

I am one of 110,000 retirees who lost his Medicare supplement insurance with our former employeer because of Obamacare. I will be given an "opportunity" to buy different medical insurance before the end of this month.

I didn't ask for much. The purchasing power of my former company yielded a better result for me through group insurance than I could have done in the open market alone so I was fine with paying 100% of that premium. But the policy did not meet Obamacare standards. So now I have none. Thankfully, I've been healthy but who knows what next year might bring. I'm really looking for a catastrophic policy, not one of the gold plated ones.

So I feel your pain, TAM. I can only hope that there are enough of us who make that pain known and get this regime thrown out of power.

I was perfectly healthy right up to the cancer diagnosis in 2006 at age 40 and never saw it coming, luckly it was before Obamacare and I had great health insurance. Today it would likely bankrupt me so if (when) it reoccures I doubt I will tell anyone and let it run it's course. I'm thankful I still have group life insurance.

I wish we could go back to the olden days when people paid the doctor for his/her services and had an insurance policy for when the wheels come off.

They don't have those now? Something like a disaster policy with large deductibles? This is a question, not a statement.

Two posts that were clearly political were deleted. If it happens again, this thread will be locked and those folks violating the no-political posts rule will find themselves unable to post in the Off-Topic forum. I guess they thought we were joking.

Members wanted the Off-Topic forum reopened and we're not going to let a few Members cause it to be closed again.

You can get a high deductible plan, but there are still lots of rules and restrictions, you still have to deal with routing things through your insurer, finding a doctor you like that takes your insurance, not being able to purchase from an out of state insurer, having to purchase through your employer to get insurance on a pre-tax basis, and a host of other problems associated with this system.

If it was up to me, I would get rid of the pre-tax deduction for health insurance premiums (thereby disentangling insurance from employment) and get rid of laws preventing insurance companies from competing across state lines.

TAM, I'm sorry that this has happened. Remember, everything that happens has a reason for happening. Keep your faith in God and start looking for another policy. I will keep you and your wife in my prayers.

TAM,

My wife, recently retired, had a catastrophic medical insurance policy, by that I mean a huge deductible with a very large monthly premium.

Were she diagnosed with something potentially lethal or got into a monstrous car accident that resulted in massive/major surgery she was covered.

She got a letter last week saying this policy was going to be canceled next month.

You know why...

Those are a couple ideas I would whole-heartedly support. It would be a big step in the right direction, IMHO.

Tam redact the personal identifying information (policy #, etc.), copy and send it to your congressmen (Senate and House). Attach a note stating obcare caused this and you expect them to get it rectified. You realize they didn't personally do this to you but their constituents did and apparently it was with malice.

Don't know if that would help but it would give them more ammunition.
