Get in good with your county Ag agent and the local master gardeners. They are a wealth of information and often free cuttings/starters.

Thanks for this thread and Neil Sperry's book. My wife and I tried a container garden this year (being our first year in TX and we are still renting) and we didn't have much success. Tomatoes did OK, bugs got to the summer squash, and all of the herbs were killed off due to the heat and lack of water (partially my fault for making the herb containers too shallow.

I will read up using his book and give it ago again next year.

When I moved to Texas 35 years ago I thought I could garden. Live in North Texas (zone 7), had raised beds, good soil, drip irrigation, wife built a greenhouse (very expensive), everything you need. Sure! Could grow okra but don't like okra. Did ok with onions. Never did well with tomatoes except the yellow pear. Tried fruit trees. Apples do good. Pears ok but they never tasted good. Cherry trees all died. Pecans are variable, lost some with the drought. Am now experimenting with pistachio trees. Very hard to get stock. I have one male and one female tree and hope to live long enough to see the results. North Texas should be an ideal area for pistachio trees but nobody sells stock. Will post results in 10 years.
