Actve LEO and Shooting Proficiency

Can an active LEO opt out of the shooting proficiency? If so, what documentation do they submit to DPS?

Yes...sort of...

He or she has to submit a letter on dept letterhead signed by the chief which includes a description of the weapon platforms you have qualified on and are authorized to carry. The exact verbiage is in the TGC.

Thanks for the reply. Reading TGC 411.1911 it sounds like they don't even have to take the classroom portion. It sounds like they just apply with their letter from the head of the department. Am I interpreting this correctly?


(a) A person who is licensed as a peace officer under Chapter 415 and is employed full-time as a peace officer by a law enforcement agency may apply for a license under this subchapter. The person shall submit to the department two complete sets of legible and classifiable fingerprints and a sworn statement of the head of the law enforcement agency employing the applicant. A head of a law enforcement agency may not refuse to issue a statement under this subsection. If the applicant alleges that the statement is untrue, the department shall investigate the validity of the statement. That pretty much sums it up. The leo, who can already carry anywhere has to get all that info. Makes no sense. My dept couldn't figure why I even wanted the letter since I don't need it.

It seems to me it would be a lot easier and faster to shoot the 50 rounds instead of jumping through all those hoops to avoid it.

At least some LEOs get their CHL to avoid the 4473 NICS check when buying firearms.

I shot the 50 rounds both at the original class and the renewal because it is fun :).

You can add a timed reload to the CHL course of fire, and it will meet TCOLE requirements for a Texas Peace Officer Handgun Qualification.

I got it for the NICS exemption and also because I fully support the right to carry.

So they don't need the classroom? Makes sense they don't. I mean what are they going to get out of firearm safety and use of force?

Any active LEOs out there who have tested this? That is just filled out an application, sent in a letter and got your CHL without taking the class? I have 8 active Sheriff deputies wanting me to conduct a class for them so they can get their CHL. Hate to put them through the class and then find out they didn't need to attend.

Yes. I have one and renewed under this. Tell them to apply for the CHL online. There is a box to check for the exemption and it then tells them what they need to do.
