The FBI is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the return of 2 rifles that were, as O’Ryan Johnson of the Boston Herald reports, “stolen from an FBI SWAT emergency response vehicle.”

This is the reality of life. There are criminals out there. They sometimes target police vehicles and police officers homes looking for guns. SWAT team members carry their equipment in the car 24/7 as they are on call. Guns have also been stolen from marked patrol cars as well. Let's not forget that guns are also stolen from chl members cars as well.

You should also take license plate frames off that advertise where you bought your car. Crooks look for out of town plates hoping for a tourist.

I dunno maybe the military is held to a higher standard but when I was in the Army I would be brought up on charges if I left my weapon(1ea) unsecure and it was stolen. I am sure he will get in trouble but will he lose rank, money and have to stay at work for a few weeks? doubtful

I don't think the military drives around and parks g-rides on city streets 24/7 so that is comparing apples to oranges at best. If the weapon was secured to dept standards there should be no discipline. If they violated policy then they will be disciplined.

Andover Police Commander Charles Heseltine said investigators found fingerprints on the FBI vehicle and another vehicle that was broken into. Those prints were run through a national database and that led them to the teenager.

A 16 year old who already has fingerprints in a national database sorta says something, doesn't it?

While a Solider "could" be disciplined with non Judicial or court marshal punishment, unless the act was malicious, repetitive or coupled with some other transgression, UCMJ action is unlikely in most all cases...

Weapons left in the DFAC, PX, vehicles, latrines, USO, and every other place conceivable, and a few that are not has happened in my time.. and only in rare cases were those Soldiers charged with a UCMJ infraction.

I would expect a LEO to face much the same... if they were following established policy, nothing should happen.. If other, then supervisors should look at the whole of the event and pass down correction action, retraining and punishment that fits.

Members of FBI swat are allowed to keep weapons in their vehicle trunks to enable quick response. In a SUV they would require some separate locking device container. If the guns were locked in the car truck at the agents house he would be entirely within policy.
