Front sight info

Had a great match today. I was shooting IDPA out at Elm Fork in Dallas and was using my Beretta PX4 to shoot SSP division. Well, about 3/4 the way through the match, my fiber optic rod broke in my front sight. It's a custom creation and I've had to replace it before and is no big deal. This time, I had forgotten the Fiber Optic rod and had to shoot it as-is. Well, to my amazement, I shot suprisingly well. I went through the last stage like I had a full auto selector switch on my pistol and was accurate to boot!

So, now I'm wondering if it was the sight picture or supershooter skills. I'm leaning towards sight picture, but will going from a fiber optic to a plain black sight be that much better? Why?

The state match is in two weeks and now I've got to figure this all out. Should I put it back in or keep it black? Or go with a white dot? aaaaaarrrgggg!!!!!!

I think you shot better because there was something different, so you had to concentrate on it.

Does that leave the front sight with a hole in it? The reason I ask is that I think I saw somewhere that a setup like that was illegal in some competition(s).
Of course, in my way of thinking if it was seen as an advantage, I wanted something like that on my defense weapon.

If it works and isn't disallowed, go for it.

The hole is actually at a slight angle. A friend drilled out the front sight which is angled down in front to accept a piece of fiber optic rod. That's legal in IDPA, but I don't know if a ghost ring front sight is. I can put the standard one back if it turns out to work better.

What really amazed me was the CHL class that came in after the match. A few of the guys were down range shooting a few rounds afterward and the CHL instructors just walked downrange past them. Gimme a break!! They're teaching CHL courses and doing things like that? Wish I could've found out their info. I'd highly recommend everyone stear clear of that course!!!

Great match, though. Had a chance to meet up with alot of great people.

If they're walking downrange during live fire, you may not have to wait very long before they're no longer teaching the course...or doing anything else, either.

I'm buyin' Linda's explanation. An analogy in sports is that if you sustain an injury (obviously not one serious enough to take you out of the game) you tend to concentrate much better because you have something new in the environment that you have to deal with and overcome. You see occasional examples of athletes from all sorts of disciplines seeming to compete just a little more effectively if they're dealing with a minor injury.

Hey; just like those CHL instructors! One gets a 9mm through a deltoid, and I'll guarantee he'll become one mega-safety-conscious instructor...

I can agree with this........

however, another possibility.... the fiber optics could also be drawing too much of your Attention and you focus more on the sight than on the target...
