Saw the movie too last night. I liked that Marcus has a cameo in the movie as a SEAL. Of course aftwards I was telling my wife the things they got wrong - I think i remember Marcus carrying a KA 308 rifle, not a 5.56, so his officer could not have given him his mags before making his run. Also axe racking his M4 and the riding/pushing the charging handle back forwards is a big no-no.. I read the book a while ago and thew village timeline seemed a bit condensed and different.. but for the sake of cinema it made sense. I remember the infamous Coke bottle of disease well though..Overall good movie.. the wife stayed awake for all of it, so it was better than most

I think in the book Luttrell stated that he and another member of his team (which one escapes me right now) carried a Mk. 12 Mod 1 SPR.

Yes.. my bad.. I must have been confusing it with another book.. maybe Chris Kyle's.. Time to re-read. I just went back in the book (pg. 213). However it also notes that they took Sig 9mm pistols. not like the Beretta that Axe is making his last stand with in the movie..

Only on a gun forum would "film critics" notice the operation of particular weapon or whether or not they were the same as depicted in the book.

My dad was an Army aviator and I hated watching movies with helicopters in them with him. "That is a Cobra AH-1, but the sound is from a Heuy UH-1."

You guys would be as bad. :biggrinjester:

It's amazing how sounds can trigger memories and emotions. In 1989, California was invaded by the Mediterranean fruit flies [Medfly] which some experts said could decimate certain crops. Aerial spraying of the pesticide Malathion was used to help irradiate the pest. For several months they used Hueys for the night time aerial spraying over the Santa Clara valley and other areas of California. During this time a friend of mine, a Vietnam vet, told me that we would wake up in a cold sweat when he heard the distinctive sound of those helicopters.

During an interview with Marcus Luttrell, he said that he wished that there was some way to introduce the sense of smell into the movie theater. He said that the smell of blood, burning hair and flesh would add to the realism of this movie and make it closer to the real experience.

I really liked the book I almost think it would have been better to see the movie first, then read the book. Reading the book, it was hard to visualize the forest in Afghanistan. I always see it as dry and rocky. I also thought that the movie didn't put enough emphasis on the friendship he made with Gulab and the villagers.
I believe there is safety in numbers..
numbers like: 9, .22, .38, .357, .45, .223, 5.56, 7.62, 6.5, .30-06...

O6nop, I haven't read the book yet. I too was very surprised to see the tall piney woods of Afghanistan. That caught me by surprise as I thought all of area was nothing but dirt, sand and rocks.

I'm impressed they were able to get so many copies of the film on such short notice.

I don't think they use actual film nowadays.

Me and a bunch of my friends were the same way when Topgun first came out. We were in a Tomcat squadron and several of the civilians kept shushing us when we were pointing out all the mistakes.

Just a guess that because it's his hometown perhaps they anticipated the demand and obtained enough copies to use on each screen.

Saw the film this weekend and was highly impressed. Nearly packed theater for a mid-day showing. Half the crowd stood up and clapped as the movie ended with the text "dedicated to the men who served in Operation Red Wing". Definitely some wet eyes in the crowd too.

Reminded me a lot of the ethos of "Blackhawk Down" and "Saving Private Ryan" - equally as good a film too.
