You guys are kinda making me "HomeSick"

I got started building computers because of Bill Cheek and having to hand program 25,000 channels into a Pro-2004 scanner after doing mods to it. Then I got AOR/ICOM receivers and a bunch of stuff, got away from radios and got too involved in computers, and now I need to learn all the new stuff and try to remember what I knew 25 years ago, and learn what I never knew, so I can get licensed and save up to buy more stuff.

Every few years I wonder how Bill's daughter and wife are, but haven't contacted them since he passed.

If you don't know who Bill Cheek/Commtronics Engineering is, you should. More memory, faster MHz, (which also sped up computers) computer interfaces and software to program radios are only part of what he inspired others to continue IMHO.

Also, he was a Prepper in many ways. And the Government didn't much like him.

I miss him, but his work lives on.. Next year I may get licensed.

Also, for someone that wants to play with a cheap receiver, this article talks about a software solution that receives in the 64-1700MHz range. I got a USB tuner from Deal Extreme for $20. http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/12/0 ... dio-for-11 The video is pretty neat and shows what is possible...........

I am interested in building or utilizing a GMRS repeater in Marble Falls area. I am putting in my application for use of the GMRS frequency but I don't see a point to paying for it if building my own booster/repeater is going to be soooo expensive! Anyone have any idea where I can pick one up on the cheap? Anyone in the area have a repeater frequency I can utilize?

Motorola GM300's (two) can be used as a GMRS repeater, but you will have a from a few hundred to several hundred dollars in the entire setup. You need two radios, a controller, programming cable, GM300 Radio Doctor programming software, linking cable, duplexer (notch filter type), antenna and coax. If you don't want to program the radios yourself, you can leave off the programming cable (~$30) and GM300 Radio Doctor software (Free) and pay someone from $25 to $35 each to program your radios. Both the series 3 and 4 cover some, but not all, of the GRMS frequencies.

I don't know squat about GMRS, but from the very few frequencies available, I wouldn't even consider building a GMRS repeater. The power limitations and antenna height (20' ?) limitations are going to result in very limited range, otherwise the repeaters would be useless with all of the interference.

I may get with you about programming my GM300s or GR300. Are you using Radio Doctor? This is good to know.

Do you also program MaxTracs and the CDM1250s? There are a lot more MaxTracs in VHF and UHF than there are actual GM300s and at prices that kids in our soon-to-be-organized youth club could afford. I'd be interested in one of the CDM 1250s on 6 meters.
