Went Shopping Today For Ammo

I remember when a cup of coffee or a fountain coke was 5 cents.

And I remember when a gallon of gas was 27 cents...in fact, it cost less than 30 cents from 1950 through 1965, and only rose to 38 cents by 1974.

Ain't it the truth. Early in 2012 I bought a decent holster for my Buckmark thinking that, with the ammo situation as it was (and still is, even if loosening slightly), I could at least get move-and-shoot live-fire range-time with inexpensive ammo.

I used to keep a history of researched ammo prices, but stopped because online sources appeared that did a good job of helping me source the best deals. I kinda wish I'd maintained that database just for referential purposes. I didn't even bother to include .22LR at the time.

But here are some examples:

• .223 Fiocchi 55gr FMJ; brass cased, Boxer-primed, non-corrosive, reloadable; 30.6 cents per round (August 2007)
• .308 Prvi Partizan 145 gr FMJ; brass cased, Boxer-primed, non-corrosive, reloadable; 46.8 cents per round (May 2008)
• .40 S&W Winchester 180 gr FMJ; brass cased, Boxer-primed, non-corrosive, reloadable; 20.1 cents per round (June 2007)
• .45 ACP Sellier & Bellot 230 gr FMJ; brass cased, Boxer-primed, non-corrosive, reloadable; 21.2 cents per round (April 2007)
• 9mm Sellier & Bellot 115 gr FMJ; brass cased, Boxer-primed, non-corrosive, reloadable; 13.8 cents per round (September 2007)

At this stage, at least, I don't consider steel-cased ammo suitable for any firearm I own other than AKs.

Shouldn't ammunition be on the commodities market? I mean, if you can invest in orange juice futures, what about a product that has an infinitely greater shelf-life and a high demand? If I'd sunk all of my 401(k) into ammo futures 20 years ago, my retirement fund would be lookin' pretty sweet.

There's still a Gibsons in Weatherford with a pretty decent gun counter in the back. Prices are decent too. I bought a threaded barrel 22/45 there about a year ago.

Just to be sure since you're in MO - you're talking about Weatherford, Texas, right?
Edit: I just had to google it and I answered my own question. Weatherford, TX and found out there's one in Kerrville, Tx , too!

Opps, yeah sorry didn't think about that. I used to always hit up Gibson's whenever I headed into Weatherford for anything (we lived between Weatherford and Azle from 2010 to late last year), would occasionally come across some good deals. I've been in the Kerrville store as well, but couldn't tell you if they had a gun counter or what its like as its been almost 10 years ago at this point.

When I lived in Lake Dallas, some 30 plus years ago, there was a Gibsons on 35 in Lewisville we would go to at least once a week. I loved the place because my (now ex) wife could shop for kids cloths and other junk while I spent the entire time drooling over cheap guns. I bought my first Mossberg pump shotgun from Gibsons. I don't think I paid more than 125 dollars for it. LOL... Great Memories of Gibsons.

The first Gibson's I ever visited was in Greenville, Tx where we had lots of relatives. I remember the aisles were narrow and merchandise was stacked on gondola shelves clear to the ceiling. I worked for a discount chain called Globe Discount City in the 60's and 70's and though the Gibson stores weren't near ours we considered them one of our main competitors price wise. We're headed up to Mansfield tomorrow and I think I'll drive over to Weatherford if I get the time. I recently went through a bunch of old stuff I have from the 60's and found some prices from 1966 for bullets, primers and cases. Sierra 110 grn JSP .30 M1 Carbine bullets $2.17/100, Sierra 168 grn BTHP Match bullets $2.68/100 (I gave those to my veterinarian), RWS large Rifle primers $1.96/250 and a set of Lyman 3 die pistol .357 $13.50 MSRP.

Well I figure we are all learning from one another... That and that is what Mrs. Byron always said in 3rd grade when we brought gum to class ;)

Need??? Define need... I have 1500 rounds and I don't shoot .22 much. Now if I was at WalMart and they had it I would buy it... I just thought they didn't make .22 anymore!
