I also wonder about the amount of genetic engineering of foods, additives, preservatives, etc. I am sure that number and amount of foreign chemicals that we ingest has exponentially increased in the last 40 years. That could be a factor in the increasing rate of allergies.
Good question!

OTOH, we ran with scissors, shot BB guns and drank from the garden hose....all without the benefit of TV and TV commercials.
I remember when I was a kid, in the summertime, we used to run up and take ice from the milk trucks.
[For the benefit of the younger forum members, back then milk was delivered every morning by "The Milkman" and left on the porch. It was in glass bottles, but we didn't cut ourselves either.]
We always were told that we would get very sick if we ate the ice, but I never knew of anyone who got sick.

Back in those days the medical and forensic tests were not as sensitive and sophisticated as today.
Unless it was an obvious illness or accident, many times they didn't have a clue to the real cause of death.

You're right. I never figured out what "consumption" was but people died from it. Again, I ask my naïve and perhaps ignorant question: if everything we do, eat and drink is hazardous to our health, how come there are so many people...everywhere?

Death from tuberculosis was called "Consumption". I will PM your answer for the second question.
