The article I read on this said it was a car bomb training class, which might better explain the number of casualties (than an explosive belt).

The commander/instructor was not named, but yes, I am thinking "Achmed."

Bonus is that it was supposed to also be a propaganda video and they were videoing it. I wonder if the video survived?

Good riddance to them.

Back in August, 1979 I had just left the bus station in Jerusalem in route to Tel Aviv. Twenty minutes later, a van blew up outside the station killing only the homicide bomber and the driver. The bomber was supposed to walk into the terminal and detonate.

Was that in the syllabus?

I bet that class blew their mind.

The great part is that they didn't get to take any of US with them.
They did good!

A case of premature detonation! ;-)

I actually DID submit this story to the Darwin Awards people on the day the story came out, February 10. I got an email back explaining that they had rejected it because they have a policy of not including suicide bombers in their awards selections. Their message thanked me for submitting it, but said:
We typically don't accept stories involving suicide bombers because they're well aware of the inherent dangers and also more than willing to sacrifice their own lives in order to kill and maim as many innocent victims as they can.

Can't much argue with 'em there.

I might agree with them about the students but not the instructor. The guys instructing/encouraging other to sacrifice themselves aren't so willing to do the same.
