Meanwhile... In Allen Texas, we were eating at an inexpensive Mexican food place. There was a couple about my age, fifty something's, sitting with a very loud talking woman who appeared to be much older. She spent a good thirty minutes ranting about how the republicans had ruined Obama Care and were the cause of gun violence in this country. I just sat there mesmerized by how completely clueless some folks can be. At one point she suggested that if Obama had another term, he could straighten all this mess out. I bet your two old birds and my old bird all watch the same news channel.

I have heard this out of people before and it really cracks me up. My response, "Do you really think the people going to see a Batman movie in Colorado thought they were putting themselves in a situation where they needed protection?"

Most just stare at me blankly in response...go figure.

Makes you wonder how they got to be "old birds' don't it? I remember a line in one of the late Richard Pryor's comedy skits about the cemeteries being full of , "...smart young MoFos..." or something like that.

Sitting next to two old birds at dinner and they are talking about a recent shooting where a man was killed as he broke into a truck in the owners driveway. They actually laid blame on the owner as he was not responsible in securing his belongings well enough to prevent the break in. They further talked about how people that own/use/carry guns are "just looking to shoot someone, and why would you put yourself in a situation where you need protection." I found it rather hilarious that they were discussing this while sitting 5 feet away from my concealed, fully loaded .357 magnum. I wanted so badly to shut them up, but I just listened and laughed to myself.

There have been several robberies lately where the BG follows a woman home and uses a knife or gun. This was the subject of discussion
with some guys at lunch the other day. Then, I was forwarded the following neighborhood crime watch report (not my neighborhood). I
wonder how the two old birds would feel if they were the victim......" putting themselves in a situation where they need protection".....
like, pulling into their own driveways.

Crime Alert! 2-11-14
This incident was reported to the police and occurred around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday, 2.10.14

A resident living at the 8000 block of Claremont near Highland Road. This is what was reported:

“I wanted to let you know that I was robbed coming out of my garage and walking to my back patio last night at about 8:20. The police believe that I was followed home from Chili's in Casa Linda.

The description that I gave fits the description of suspect they have been talking about on the news. His height was between 5'10 - 6', white or Hispanic, wearing dark clothes with a black ski mask and gloves. The only way I could see he was lighter skin was through the holes for his eyes on the ski mask. He had a large knife (like a pocket knife) with a smooth edged bladed about 4"-5" long which he waived in front of my neck and my face. He cut the strap off of my wristlet and ran to a parked car across the street. The car turned left on Highland. It was a lighter colored sedan. I originally thought it was an older model BMW sedan but I now think it was the same body style of the 2004 Honda Accord. The odd thing about this was that I remembered a gold Accord parked directly across from me in the parking lot in front of H&R Block (at Casa Linda) with its lights on. The police said this guy is changing cars for each crime. DPD is checking the red light camera in front of Chili's on Buckner for any clues. They were also in touch with Albertsons to review their cameras. They also told me that this same guy robbed someone in Forest Hills Thursday night. One officer mentioned the street of San Cristobal.

I am worried because there are so people living in Claremont that either have detached garages or park in their driveways. If this suspect is following people home (especially women) we all need to be extra careful about our surroundings everywhere. The police said most of these robberies are happening between 6:00-8:00 p.m. The victim was not hurt. The suspect took the victim’s cell phone, driver’s license, bank card and some cash. The victim states that DPD response was amazing. A police car arrived in less than one minute after calling the 911 dispatcher. 3 cars were here in less than 4 minutes. They are taking this guy seriously. One of the officers grew up in the neighborhood and his parents are still here. Today was his day off but he felt concerned enough to come when he heard the call come through.

Let's all stay vigilant and keep our eyes open and watchful for one another. Please share this information with a neighbor or friend. This resident did the right thing, called the police immediately, THEN reported it to CANA. Let's look out for one another, not all of our residents have computers.

I get it.. I don't find it funny though. Read through forum posts here. There are people here who feel it's justified to shoot a surrendered passenger in a vehicle if the driver committed a serious crime. And there are a bunch of people in the middle - those who would hand over the keys to a vehicle if it would prevent a shooting and those that would shoot to protect the $100 of cash in their pocket because they don't know if the cash will put an end to the confrontation.

Suggesting that the victim is "at fault" because they didn't lock up valuables is absurd, but suggesting we do what we can to stay clear of robberies isn't... And I know that I'm don't always do what I should be doing to keep my property from loss.

And on the flip side, a business meeting I had with a client on Tuesday turned into a discussion on who all had their CHL (the majority of the room). Have I mentioned I love this state?
