shooting distance

just a quick question for everyone.... when you go to a range what distance to you normally shoot at.. CHL class was 3,7,15 yards... if i remember right all pistol quals in the Navy was 25 ft. not going to range, but to private land... thanks

I usually practice with handguns at distances I expect to encounter in self defense situations. I will do some longer range shooting for fun but most of my practice is at conversational distance while moving.

Most of my rifle practice is at distances I expect to encounter in hunting. I'll do some at longer ranges and some snap shooting to round it out, but most is 25-75 yards.

Same here. Most of my practice is for self defense purposes. Occasionally I will run the target out to twenty five yards and bring out my five inch barrel guns.

My concealed carry weapons are not really much good at distances greater than 15 yards. 2-3 inch barrels combined with my weird eye sight is a joke at 25 yards and further. I can hit the target but with very inconsistent shot placement. My hope is that if I have a 25 yard head start on you I can get away... .

10 yrds or less, is what we shoot in our real world gun and personal protection matches at Dallas Pistol Club. For real-steel targets are up to 25 to 35 yrds and good luck with your trigger-finger placement.

What were you shooting and how? Were you drawing from a holster and getting off your first shot quickly. Shooting rapid fire, etc?

Depends upon what I am practicing.

If marksmanship and shooting fundamentals, I'll even enjoy shooting 50 yards. If I can consistently hit a target at 50 yards, then moving to 7 yards feels HUGE!

But if I am practicing draw, flash sight picture, or any other kind of defensive-oriented shooting, then a mix of distances from 3-7-10-15-25 is useful. I need to learn and practice that my sight picture at 3 yards is different from the sight picture needed to hit the target at 25 yards. Double tap speed varies IMMENSELY with distance.

Usually train at 7-15 yards with my carry piece. Some will argue my logic, but I don't generally practice at longer distances with a 3" barreled carry gun. I find it unlikely that a self defense scenario would occur at distances of 25+ yards. Just my .02

I realize I could or should probably look it up but asking on this thread may help others. Would you mind elaborating on that last paragraph a bit? It makes sense to me. It is something I never gave deliberate thought to. Now I just need to think about it while practicing.

had target setup on a round bale, 5 rds loaded in magazines (holdover from Navy days). drew from a holster and tried to get first round off within 2 secs.

Same here. I noticed four "fliers" on that target. That is what I get when I try shooting my carry weapons at fifty yards. Those fliers represent dead innocent bystanders to me and a legal situation I don't want any part of. The shots all over the shoulders and what not represent non lethal hits and a possibility the other guy is able to continue the attack.

I'm going with seeking cover or putting distance between us at fifty yards. Probably a little of both.

At 25 feet, at self defense speeds with my carry weapons, my rounds are all in the eight inch circle you speak of. Typically even tighter than 8" if I take slow controlled shots.

I realize you didn't ask for advice, so ignore me if I am out of line. At 8 yards your shots are pretty all over the place. It leads me to believe that you are jerking or snatching at the trigger, and perhaps letting the front sight get too high. Slow down and smooth out the trigger.

Slow is smooth. Was it Bill Jordan who said " speed is fine, but accuracy is final"?

I practice within talking / shouting distances with only a bit of longer, 25yd distances. I have shot IDPA matches for on-the-move and other skills. I enjoy but don't have much use for longer-than-defensive distances. IDPA and other games give me a realistic picture of my distance / speed / accuracy skills.
