I know that was the reason given, but there's no doubt that eliminating them saved money for the auto makers.WildBill wrote:Pawpaw wrote:I still miss the old vent windows.I think this was due to looks over function.

Those vents were the cheapest "air conditioning" available. The ones in the Merc could be turned to catch air and shove it into the front seat. I'm really thankful that I was in PA, not Texas at the time.Pawpaw wrote: Most cars had that until they started cheaping out and made you push the vent window open by hand. I still miss the old vent windows.

First car... I got it the day I got my drivers license when I was 14 in 1980. 1966 Chevy Impala with a 396 v8 with 23,000 original miles on it. It also had a 8 track tape player in it. It was my grandfathers. He sold it to me...

My 53 Merc was black and was a sedan. If it had been a coupe I would of seriously tried to restore it. At least I think I would...that was a very long time ago.The Annoyed Man wrote:When I was a little boy, my dad drove a '53 Merc. It was the first car that I worked on - put a new muffler and a new clutch in it without many tools.

Ours was a sedan, too. I would love to be able to tinker with that flat head engine again. It was a long time ago for me, too. I'm pretty sure that Dad sold it around 64. He ended up with a Triumph Spitfire and that was a long ways away from the Merc.Purplehood wrote:My 53 Merc was black and was a sedan. If it had been a coupe I would of seriously tried to restore it. Not mine but same thing. 0-60 in 22 seconds, but it was turbo... and diesel. Also had a backup fuel tank in the trunk and could do +-1000 miles on one fillup. I literally only filled it up one time while I owned it

My first was a 1981 Datsun 510 4-door hatchback, a gift from Grandma. First car I bought was a 1984 Camaro Z28.

My first car was a truck. I had a 1992 GMC Sierra extended cab 4x4. It was two tone dark blue and silver. I got it from my brother in 1998. I think it already had 185,000 miles on it when I got it and needed a fair amount of work, but after that it ran well.

These are some nice first rides...
Mine was a powder blue 1974 IH Scout. The floor boards had rusted beneath the rubber mats so you had to be careful where you stepped. One thing nice about that old scout was you could sit in the engine compartment and work on just about anything. You could nearly change the old from the top:)
