Range Qualification Question

Post by howdy »

I seem to remember hearing that all "helpers" on the range during the CHL shooting qualification are required to be CHL Instructors. Did I dream this or is this a fact.

I am not an instructor, but I have helped on the range during quals, so I think you dreamed it up

I know not DPS' posture on such now, but that was indeed a fact when I did Dan Walker's "old school" in 1995.

They do not have to be instructors to help. They just cannot call the rounds or grade the targets without being the instructor that signs off on the CHL-100.

Greybeard was correct in the "old school". However Keith is correct from our last instructor renewal class update. :tiphat:

I agree with the above. Since guest instructors are no longer allowed, only the instructor can run the qualification and score the targets. But I know of nothing that precludes having assistance with setting up, taking down, range safety, etc. My "IANAL" opinion.

I also specifically asked about a "helper" (not guest instructor) for class. Someone to demonstrate different carry techniques, self defense scenarios, etc., while I actually taught the subject matter. I was told by DPS that this was allowed as long as the helper didn't actually teach.
