It can be used in that manner, but it's not limited to brothel managers. The salutation "Dear Sir/Madam" is still in common use.Abraham wrote:Why is the word "Madam" in their title?

As in Madam Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, or Madam President when she ends up winning the election in 2016 if we don't get our act together.

I'm familiar with the use of "Madam" for various offices, but I guess I thought it unnecessary title elaboration for Sheriff.
