Recommendations for a .22 supressor / silencer?

Post by n5wd »

I'm wanting to purchase a suppressor / silencer for my .22's, and I'm sure some of the folks on this forum will have some recommendations both towards a specific can and towards a dealer, preferably in the Fort Worth/Denton/Dallas triangle.

I've tried contacting one Class3 dealer that's advertising their services in their signature line here on the forum, but after 3 weeks and no response to my P-mail or email, the question's now open for public comment and suggestions.

Anyone have some recommendations?

Can you get a CLEO signoff and have the suppressor transferred to you personally, or will you have to use a trust?
Will the suppressor only be used for .22LR or also for more powerful cartridges (.22WMR, etc.)?

Silencerco sparrow is by far the most popular.

I know people have good things to say about silcenershop on the web.

Silencerco Sparrow. Easy to clean by design. Very quiet with subsonic ammo. Handles .22LR, .17HMR, .22MAG, .22WMR, .22 Hornet, 5.7x28.

Gthaustex and winters, thanks for the recommendation! They're in my top 3 so far.

Clevernickname, since my son and daughter-in-law are both shooters (and it looks like the grandkids are going to be enthusiastic about it as well), we're going with a trust to insure that the device will continue to be available to the family.

Try either Capitol Armory or Silencer Shop. They're both in Austin, but they'll ship the suppressor directly to you once approved. Yes, it's legal. I bought a suppessor from Capitol Armory earlier this year this way and have one in process with Silencer Shop right now.

The Sparrow wouldn't be a bad choice.

Andy -we're already set up with the trust, just need to decide what to purchase, and who to purchase it from. I'll try and drop by Euless Guns and see what they've got. Thanks.

And Clevernickname -thanks for the shop recommendations. Been looking at SilencerShop's website, but need to check out Capitol.

Silencershop had a great blog article entitled "Picking the right rimfire suppressor" in april of 2013. (http://www.silencershop.com/picking-rimfire-suppressor)
They noted several important considerations and had several recommendations based on these categories:
  • Ease of Maintenance/Disassembly
  • Quietest
  • Best Bang for the Buck
  • Handles .22 Mag / .17 HMR
  • Lightweight
  • Stainless Steel Finish
  • Quick Attach Suppressor
Some other things you may want to consider are:
  • "first round pop" (louder first shot) which tends to be more pronounced on monocore designs compared to K baffles
  • better performance on a rifle or a pistol
  • cost (do you plan on getting more than one so multiple people can shoot at once [ex. dueling trees steel targets, tin can competitions, etc.]]
  • multi caliber with non rimfire calibers (Although you can't use rimfire on most centerfire suppressors, some monocore designs like Liberty Mystic X are rated for rimfire and are very quiet.)
That being said, yeah the Silencerco Sparrow is on my short list too ;-)
