What do you like the MOST and the LEAST about IDPA?

Post by solaritx »

This is NOT FOR IDPA BASHING. The reason for this is to give club officials/match directors information on what they are doing well and areas of improvement. Obviously,some of the pros/cons will be at the National level but this is not to be IDPA BASHING. I would wish this to be more on what you like to see and what bothers you ON THE LOCAL MATCH LEVEL. :grin:

LIKE

- various shooting scenarios
- keeping things grounded to reality and not get caught up in the gaming side of things
- friendship and camaraderie among members and guests

Add:
- single handed shooting
- weak hand shooting
- shooting while carrying a bag or other object
- shooting on the move
- moving from one barricade to another
- shooting after opening a door
- moving targets (spinners, swingers and poppers)

DON'T LIKE

- three hour matches and only 3-4 chances to shoot

Add:
- all shots facing one direction (backdrop of range)

Right along with propellerhead.

And I like being able to try out different a variety of styles, holsters, grips, and such.

And I don't it when I run a match and people are overly critical of my stages.

+1

I've only shot a few matches now, but I think it's the most realistic shooting you can get without going to an expensive privately own shoot house special for training.

Like:
* shooting on the move
* Presenting the shooter with options how to shoot a stage (risk/reward)
* broad spectrum of shooting skills used
* reactive targets
* moving targets
* non-square range shooting positions (from ground, sub-optimal foot placement)
* realistic defense shooting skills (most of the above)

Don't Like:
* All shots going the same direction
* small number of non-threats (not realistic)
* every stage a 12 round stage
* forced to just stand there in the open and shoot without movement
* forced reloads on the clock
* walk throughs (prefer blind stages)
* gamers

LIKE:
The people that participate in the sport
A chance to draw and shoot rather than just standing there punching paper
Watching both the youth of the sport improve as well as less experienced shooters improve.
A chance to evaluate where I am personally lacking in the sport and then improving in that area/areas

DISLIKES:
This is a game and games have rules. At the local match level, I believe that the rules can be bent as long as before the match it is declared. IN A REGIONAL, STATE, OR NATIONAL MATCH, all IDPA rules must be followed. I hate going to a Sanctioned match only to find rules, esp those concerning CoF not followed.

I also would like to see the rule changed allowing more Non-threats, and thus allowing for more "realistic" CoF.

I would like to see more movement while shooting that required one to do more than the IDPA version of the moonwalk.

I would like to see more real-time reactionary targets that one must continue to engage UNTIL it "gave up" or "died". Something like a steel target plate behind the "O" downs and have 1 scored shot that must activate the target or be a FTN. Put 5 or 6 of these in a normal IDPA CoF using movement and cover and it would be fun :twisted:

I would like to see everyone less concerned with those that game and more concerned with those that shoot below their ability. Those that game, will almost always game. Those that shoot below their ability have a huge untapped potential that when released become the future backbone of the sport.

I would like to see individuals pulled aside and asked to attend some form of IDPA basics stressing safety. To often with stress, individuals do things that are not as safe as they should be, and they are totally unaware. :shock:

AND THE THING I HATE THE MOST ABOUT IDPA.......is when my teenage daughter hands me my butt and then tells my wife, my friends and of course the world about it. AND THE TROUBLE IS, IT IS HAPPENING MORE AND MORE OFTEN.

I have the hardest time with the moving & shooting.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

Isn't there a par time allowed in IDPA? I have never seen it used in a match. If some of the targets are not visible until the shooter reaches another point while retreating in the COF.....that might get em moving :grin:

I really love and appreciate all of the local matches in the Houston/Conroe area. I appreciate the people who spend their time making it happen.

There are a few rule changes that I would love to see happen (reloading behind cover) but that is not on the local level.

I wish that folks would take the time to shake hands/say thank you to the folks standing out in the heat/cold to SO a match. I am at fault for not doing this 100% of the time, but I really do try. Call them out by name as you are walking off and say...THANK YOU!

I wish that the local matches would enforce some kind of lost brass policy. Taping and resetting a COF is often done by the same few people while some are trying to catch the brass as it comes out of another person's gun! :grin: The current ammunition prices are going to force me to design a fish net for the side of my Glock to keep someone from taking my brass :smilelol5: Even this problem is a case of a few rotten apples IMO.

Likes:

Steel plates
Reactive targets
Shoot on the move
some one handed action
fast target engagement/rapid shots

Dislikes:
people who don't tape targets
muddy ranges (although it won't keep me away)
people who argue about their scores (procedurals, points down ect....)

I have a blast every time I shoot and really enjojy it all. If I had to choose likes/dislikes, these would be it.

The only thing I dislike about about IDPA is the way those targets past ten yards just laugh when they see me coming....
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.
